Why Twitter Is Poised To Build A Great Mobile Business - Business ...

This is a news note from Business Insider Intelligence, a a new research and analysis service focused on the mobile industry. Subscribers get full access to our chart library, plus the underlying data for many charts. Sign up for a free trial here.

We have been bullish on Twitter's business since the beginning, and evidence is starting to pile up that Twitter is quietly building a formidable business.

But a new element is coming into play: mobile.

As Henry Blodget recently reported, plenty of Twitter advertisers are happy with the results of the ads ? particularly mobile ads.

Also, CEO Dick Costolo told reporters this month that its mobile revenue exceeds its revenue from desktop ads on some days this year.

Twitter can build a great mobile ad business for two reasons, one which is intuitive and one which is less so:

  • Twitter is a mobile-first product. Over half of Twitter's usage is mobile according to our research (see chart), and Twitter is a great mobile product. The fact that Twitter's product is great to use on mobile (unlike, say, Facebook) ensures it has the base to build a mobile ad business.
  • Twitter has the same ads on mobile and desktop. This is less intuitive, but very important. It's important because mobile ads, particularly display ads, don't have the same performance on mobile as they do on the desktop. This shouldn't be true of Twitter's ads, which are mostly "tweets" that Twitter promotes to users. This means that Twitter's ad system is easier for advertisers, since they can have the same creative and format for mobile and desktop. More important, Twitter's mobile ads should perform well, so the company can sell them as a premium relative to other mobile ads.

Therefore, the anecdote of the advertiser very happy with his mobile ads should be more than an anecdote. Twitter's product, and its ad product, is extremely well-positioned to build a great mobile business. We remain as bullish on Twitter's business as ever.

Ways by which a Landscaping Expert Can Keep Out Weeds and Other

Lawn maintenance needs certain talents, expertise, and above all, patience. It is not always the easiest thing to maintain your lawn no matter its size--it's an undertaking best left to pros. Nevertheless, no matter how much maintenance you give your back yard, some complications often tend to sneak up on it without your knowledge. Weeds are a remarkably clear and all too persistent illustration of this sad fact.

The more extensive your lawn, the more care it should get--and the more troubles you may disregard. These issues always go undetected at the beginning, yet if left alone, they can ruin all your labors in as little as two seasons. Here are some of the most common things you need to prevent.

Crab Grass

The most problematic thing about crab grass is that it spreads its branches in all directions parallel to the ground. Its wider-bladed leaves tend to splay over the more slender and thinner lawn grass, robbing it of sunlight. Florida receives increased doses of sunlight than the more northern states; thus, lawn grass here is a lot more dependent on sunlight, making crab grass a considerable risk.

Pulling them out separately could prove effective for a couple of stalks of crab grass, yet when they've taken over the whole area, it's practically an exercise in futility to get rid of them effectively this way. This is when a qualified landscaping contractor can assist you. They use certain herbicides that are usually administered throughout spring.

Bare Places.

A lot of factors may produce bald patches on your yard: weeds, insects, dog pee, and, inadequate maintenance all contribute to it. No matter the source, a Boca Raton landscaping expert highly recommends dealing with it without delay to prevent it from spreading and afflicting other regions. For example, if the bare spots are the result of weed infestation, then you should uproot them first before you could start reseeding.

Thatch

According to reputable Coral Springs landscaping professionals in Florida, thatch is one more yard maintenance trouble that may often affect your yard. This is a brownish low-growing plant, the result of heavily fertilized and quickly grown grass. You can address this problem by yourself, or you can hire a landscaping company who will probably operate a grass aerator to get rid of all traces of dead turf.

Like it or not, your lawn somehow mirrors your perspective toward cleanliness as well as upkeep. Consequently, it has a considerable effect on the visitors' initial impressions of you. If your yard is being overrun by unwelcome plants, it's probably time to employ the services of a Weston landscaping company. To find out more relating to the most common lawn problems, you can visit ehow.com.

(AP) ? Gov. Jerry Brown and Democratic lawmakers have long warned of dire consequences if California voters reject a proposed tax hike on the November ballot. In adopting a $91.3 state billion budget, they made it clear it wasn't a hollow threat.

Lawmakers approved and the governor signed $6 billion in automatic cuts late Wednesday that will go into effect if the initiative fails. Distasteful provisions added in the final days of negotiations authorized shorter school years, less money for local police, and possible fee increases at the University of California and California State University systems.

"These trigger cuts are real," said Democratic Sen. Ted Lieu. "They will be catastrophic if the governor's initiative does not pass in November."

To make sure voters are paying attention, lawmakers also passed a separate measure that will likely give Brown's initiative top billing on the crowded fall ballot. Wealthy Los Angeles civil rights attorney Molly Munger and her rival tax initiative campaign sued the secretary of state Thursday, seeking to block what they called an abuse of power that would give the governor's proposal an unfair advantage.

The governor and lawmakers said the bulk of cuts will have to fall on public schools and universities because education accounts for more than half of state spending. The reduction could further harm the troubled education system that's responsible for more than 6 million students in nearly 10,000 schools.

Under the plan, school districts could reduce the public school year from 175 days to 160 for two years, tying Colorado for the shortest school year in the nation. California previously reduced the minimum from 180 days ? the national average ? in response to financial strains.

Brown said his tax proposal is fair and temporary.

"Our state budget problem was built up over a decade, and it won't be fixed overnight," " he said in a statement announcing he had signed the budget. "These temporary increases will ensure funding for our schools until the economy improves."

Brown, a Democrat, estimated the tax initiative will raise $8.5 billion in the new fiscal year starting July 1 by increasing the sales tax by a quarter cent to 7.5 percent for four years, and boosting the income tax on individuals who make more than $250,000 a year for seven years.

A recent Field Poll found California voters divided on Brown's initiative, with 52 percent in favor and 35 percent opposed.

Republicans blasted the way Democrats crafted the budget.

"It's a disgrace that Democrats are playing politics with the budget to sweeten the appeal for ill-fated taxes at the ballot box," Assembly Republican Leader Connie Conway of Tulare said after Democrats passed the budget package on a majority vote.

Republican state Sen. Anthony Canella said it's curious that K-12 education stands to be cut about $5.4 billion when state revenue is up compared to last year. He questioned whether labor rules will force school districts to keep paying teachers' salaries even if students log less days.

"Maybe you'll let the kids out of school but the teachers will still be employed and in addition to that, they'll get their full retirement for the year," Canella said.

In approving the budget with a majority vote, Democrats decided to give public universities additional funding if tuition is not raised next year and voters approve Brown's tax initiative. UC administrators supported the plan and said they would back off a proposal to increase tuition 6 percent this fall.

"We do think that it's a positive step toward bringing stability to funding for the University of California," said UC spokeswoman Dianne Klein. But "it's going to take some extraordinary measures to balance our budget without a fee increase."

If voters reject the tax measure, the UC and CSU systems each face a $250 million cut, which would resurrect the possibility of a midyear tuition hike.

CSU's board of trustees has already approved raising tuition at the 23-campus system by 9 percent this fall, or $498, bringing the annual bill to $5,970 for in-state students. It remained unclear Thursday whether the university would rescind that increase.

Also included on the list of automatic cuts is a $20 million cut in grants to city police departments. In addition, the state Justice Department's law enforcement program would lose $1 million.

The Brown administration has defended state spending, saying general fund expenditures are down 11.3 percent since the peak of $103 billion in 2007-08. As a share of the state economy, general fund spending is at its lowest level since 1973, the budget states.

But add in bond spending, other sources of revenue and federal funding, and the state's total spending is the highest it has ever been. For the new budget, total state spending is at $225 billion.

Republicans noted that's an increase of 7 percent from last year.

Part of that growth is due to the federal stimulus act. The federal government handed states more money for education, infrastructure and other needs in an effort to counteract the recession, however the funding is expected to wind down.

Wright-Patt Credit Union, Irongate launch mortgage company

Prospective Dayton homeowners will soon have a new option for mortgages with the restarting of Southern Ohio Mortgage, a partnership between Wright-Patt Credit Union and Irongate Realtors.

The Fairborn-based nonprofit financial cooperative and the Centerville-based real estate company announced Friday that the first phase of their partnership will begin July 1.

?This partnership is a great example of how local companies can join together to help not only stimulate the local economy, but to help area residents achieve their dreams,? said Doug Fecher, credit union president and CEO. ?And, when residents are successful, so are our communities.?

The partnership will operate in the six Irongate offices in Englewood, Beavercreek, Centerville, Kettering, Washington Township and Springboro.

?Being ?100 percent local? means better service because we can make quicker ? and better ? decisions,? Irongate Realtors Co-Owner Greg Gillen said.

Wright-Patt Credit Union operates 24 branches in Southwest Ohio with more than 225,000 members and $2.4 billion in assets. Irongate has been in business since 1975 and employs more than 300 Realtors in the area.

SIA WINNING RETAILER OF THE YEAR: TROLLHAUGEN SKI SHOP

Trollhaugen Ski Shop in Dresser, WI was awarded the 2011 SIA SnowSports North Central Retailer of the Year Award for their contribution and commitment to the growth of the snow sports industry. Owned and operated by the 2nd and 3rd generations of the Rochford family, Trollhaugen Winter Recreation area has been an icon of the Midwest snow sports scene since 1950. John Wright, buyer at Trollhaugen Ski Shop, took some time out to give us some insight on how to be a winning retailer and the challenges he has faces.

SIA: How did you get started in the industry?
JW: I knew from the first time that I skied that this would be how I would spend the rest of my life. My first job was teaching skiing at a small area in Houlton, Wisconsin called 8 Flags over Birch Park. I was 16 years old and thought I had died and gone to heaven. From there, I worked in retail, moved on to being a manufacturer?s rep, and finally back to retail. To quote Max Marolt, ?It?s been a great ride.?

SIA: Tell us about one of your top retail success stories?
JW: Without question, our greatest challenge and our greatest success was battling our way back from the fire in 2008. The shop was destroyed by a devastating blaze that May. It took the entire summer to settle with the insurance company, and all fall to rebuild. We finally reopened on Christmas Eve 2008 with accessories only. The following season we came back full force with clothing, equipment and accessories. We are the only full service, full line ski shop at a ski area in this part of the country. Something we are all very proud of.

SIA: Words of Wisdom?
JW: If I were to speak with someone just getting started in the industry, I would try to impress upon them the value of following and never losing their passion for the sport. Too often the day to day grind gets in the way of continued participation in the sport we loved so much that we chose to make it our career.

If I can think of one negative that I have observed during my tenure in the industry, it would have to be that many of the principals in the business are no longer participants in the sport. Too many creative decisions are made by non-skiers or boarders. And to this fact I believe we have taken a giant step backwards.

Google Now smart assistant could rival Siri

1 day

Google showed off its Siri clone Wednesday, and she not only seemed to get the answers right, she also threw in photos, too.

"Who is the prime minister of Japan?" a?Google exec asked his Android device before a large audience at the Google I/O developers conference in San Francisco.

The response on the screen:?"Yoshihiko Noda," accompanied by a photo of the prime minister. There were were also queries about the definition of robot (which as he noted, seemed appropriate), and asked how tall Seattle's Space Needle is. The answer, loud and clear: "604 feet," also accompanied by a photo. The "aww" moment came when the voice assistant was asked: "Show me pictures of pygmy marmosets."

The voice program ??powered by?Google Knowledge Graph?? is part of Android 4.1, or Jelly Bean, which will be available in mid-July and for certain newer?Android devices (but not all). Siri was introduced by Apple for the iPhone 4S, and while it is hugely popular, and the focus of the iPhone's ad campaigns, users are not always finding its results don't always flow as seamlessly as shown in TV commercials.

Also in Android 4.1 will be Google Now, which improves Google search.?Google will use your search and navigation history to tell you "what you need to know when you want to know it."?For example, Google Now will be able to figure out your commute and suggest alternate routes to you.

Or, if you're at a train or bus station, Google Now will let you know when your next ride is coming.

Student loans weigh heavily after graduation

(Don Ryan/AP)Ah, the summer after graduation. With rented caps and gowns returned, most graduates are hitting the pavement to look for work, or trying to ace that final internship in the hopes that they'll be hired on. But even for those who find employment, there likely remains nagging bit of unfinished business: student loans.

According to figures from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, 37 million Americans hold student loan debt. The total amount of student loan debt in the United States is estimated to be between $867 billion and $1 trillion dollars,?and default rates for student loans continue to rise. In 2012, the majority of unemployed Americans had at least some college education?the first time in our nation's history this has occurred. On Tuesday, Republican and Democratic leaders in the Senate announced they had reached an agreement on a bill to continue subsidizing student loans, keeping interest rates at 3.4 percent rather than letting them rise to 6.8 percent.

[Related: 5 college degrees that aren't worth the cost]

We asked Yahoo News readers to tell us their experiences with student loan debt. Over 600 graduates (and not-quite graduates) of all ages emailed to share their stories. We'll be sharing more of their stories in the next week over at our Tumblr.

Overwhelmingly, Yahoo News readers told us they felt burdened by their debt. "We do not like debt," wrote Katelyn Fagan, who graduated from Brigham Young University?in 2011. She and her husband have a combined student loan debt of just under $70,000. Fagan tried to work while in college, but wanted to focus on her academics. "Maybe I could have sought out other employment options (and I sometimes did) but school was my top priority."

"Student loans have basically ruined my life," says Tanya Carter, who graduated from the University of Toledo in 2008. She went to community college for two years before transferring, and attended classes part-time so she could also work. When Carter maxed out on federal loans, she turned to private loans to finish her degree. As a result of all that debt, she writes: "I never see myself owning a home, vehicle, or maybe not even getting married."

The need to delay starting a family because of financial worries was a common concern. Lauren Dollard graduated from Fordham University in 2008 with $157,000 in debt, including interest. "My boyfriend won't marry me because of my debt," she says. "He doesn't want it attached to his name (I know, this could also be an excuse)." She said she would trade her "fancy private school education" in a heartbeat to live "as an independent adult."

April Flores graduated from San Diego State in 2008 with $80,000 in private loans and $30,000 in subsidized loans. "It is going to be hard to buy a house and start a family with our debt," she writes. "We joke and say that our baby is Sallie Mae, but it is true!?Education is invaluable, but I was not wise in my early 20s and did not make the right decisions when it came to my private loans."

Flores was far from alone in bemoaning her failure to understand the implications of those promissory notes. Salvatore Aiello graduated from the University of South Carolina in 2009 with $68,000 in debt. "I blame ignorance in my pursuit of loans; my high school did a terrible job explaining our options when it came to financial aid," he told us. "They made it seem that if I wasn't rich or beyond poverty I would not have been able to go to college." Aiello followed up with a second email?he and his girlfriend are now expecting their first child. They are, in his words, "very excited at the unexpected blessing but terrified."

[Related: Cities offering to pay student loans to lure young residents]

Logan Canale attended Queens University in Charlotte, N.C.?and started feeling the pain of loans before her graduation in 2009. One borrower came after her for nonpayment of loans while she was still enrolled and taking classes.

"My private college was way too expensive for what it was worth," Canale writes.?"I just feel like I have been beaten by the system and taken advantage of. Who is making money off my education? Because it is not me."

Amber Riffey graduated from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College in 2005, and says she was simply too naive: "I wish that schools and student loan officers [would] sit down and actually explain how Sallie Mae works [...] I was just told how much I owe SMWC and 'sign here on the dotted line so we can get you signed up for next semester's classes.'"

"If I had the knowledge then that I do now, I would have paid as I went (yes, it would have most definitely taken longer but at least I would have graduated with my diploma and debt free)," says Riffey.

Although Bobbi Carlin left school before receiving a degree, she attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Southeast Community College. "Honestly, I let my parents [handle loans] for me, and when I left school, before graduating, I had no idea that I had more than one loan," says Carlin. "I paid that loan off, and discovered later there was another." She's worked to pay off all of her loans, and now has a little less than $600 in outstanding loan debt.

While students are often told that if one school isn't a good fit for them, they should transfer to another, that can add years to their education?which usually means added debt as well. Eric DeRise went to multiple universities before graduating from University of Connecticut in 2008. DeRise says he understood the details of his mounting student loan debt, but he had no grasp of what it would actually mean for his post-graduation life. "Believe me, I understood that I'd have to pay back the loans 6 months after I graduated, and I understood the strict consequences of not paying them back," he writes. "But do you think of any of that when you're 18-20 years old?" DeRise is making less than $40,000 a year at a nonprofit in Salt Point, N.Y., and he worries about how he will cover his monthly payment if interest rates rise.

[Related: Private student loans 101]

But not everybody had sympathy for graduates who complain about their debt load. Robbin S. is an older graduate?she finished her degree in business from the University of Phoenix in 2003, when she was 46. She still owes $17,500 in loans. "I'm really sick of the whiny babies complaining about their $100,000 of student loan debt and how they will never be able to pay it off," she writes. "Who in their right mind thinks that $100,000 of student loan debt (with a BS in a worthless field) is reasonable?"

For other graduates, who pursued a degree when they found themselves unable to compete in a changing workforce, the accumulated loans could be salt in the wound.

Kim Shannon of Eaton Rapids, Mich., received an associates degree in human resources management in 2010. Several years later, she is still looking for work, and the loans she placed in deferment and forbearance are entering repayment. "I am no longer optimistic about the future.?After so many rejections, I have all but given up my job search," says Shannon. "If I could go back and change things, I would. I would have gone someplace where I could learn a more marketable skill, like driving a forklift. I thought I would be?happy to?finally get a degree, but I'm not."

And then there are those parents who find themselves responsible for paying off loans they co-signed with their children. Karen DeSimone of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., is on the hook for $17,000 in loans she co-signed for her son. "We did everything we could do to get my son started," she writes. "Now we both have the loan debt."

We'll end on an optimistic note: Some Yahoo News readers felt positive about their debt, despite the challenges it posed.

Frank Mendoza of Miami, Fla., graduated from Florida International University in 2010. "I still feel that getting my degree was an achievement worthy of pride. I am, after all, the first male in my family to have a college education," writes Mendoza. "It comforts me to know that I am not the only one in this type of rough financial situation and that even this shall pass."

Pentagon's In-Orbit Satellite Recycling Program Moving Forward

An anonymous reader writes with an update on DARPA's plans to rebuild satellites in orbit. "A year old DARPA program which aims to recycle satellites in orbit has started its next phase by looking for a guinea pig defunct satellite to use for evaluating the technology required. The program involves a Dr Frankensat 'complete with mechanical arms and other "unique tools"' and blank "satlets" to build upon.' Need parts! Kill the little one!" If we're ever going to build space craft and other things in orbit, this seems like a great first step.

Hard Hat Area: Because Safety Always Comes First

Jobs that require muscle are usually careers that involve lifting, heavier lifting and more lifting. Unless you would like to work as a bouncer then you would not be doing much of it. But still, when you think heavy equipment, hardy men comes to mind first.

Yet, that is not what it is all about. Not all guys who work at areas of heavy work are sturdy because honestly, it is not all the brawns that matter. That s why many jobs do not just hire for built but rather based on the experience and training that a person has had.

Just like for forklifting, it sure is an unusual job and there might not be a degree for it but it sure needs training to become one. Forklift training is an option for people who enjoy this type of work, and since not everyone has the chance to work a white-collar job, why not try other fields as well, right?

What Is Forklifting And Why It Needs Training

Learning to operate a forklift is not like riding a bike. You cannot afford to fall so many times as you will be required to handle situations, cargos and equipment that are in need of extreme care. As an operator, you must be able to assess the situation, rightfully know how to handle and of course, minimize the potential risk.

Sure, riding and falling from the bike makes you learn but forklifting needs no extra danger. That is why every person who wishes to work with bigger toys need training. Accredited institutions offer forklift training, which involves classroom and hands-on learning. Driving a forklift is not your average drive around town, one has to be able to assess the speed with consideration to the load. This is why training is required, no person can work as one without training.

Training usually starts with sit-down sessions learning the basics of it, then after, students will be allowed to operate their own forklift with the guidance of an instructor. Moving of heavy objects, lifting from high to low and passing through inclines and skimpy spaces will all be part of the training. Everything is required to be done without spilling the contents of the cargo or bumping into other structures within the area.

As such, people with impaired vision or those with a disorder that may limit physical movement are given better options. Forklifting may look like driving a golf cart but it does beyond paved planes and flying golf balls. It needs its operators to be active, alert and of course, fit.

So you see, it is not just all about being big and muscular, it needs training that is why any man or woman, skinny or not, can train to become one. Any limitations that a person may have will be known under training. Trainings are conducted to make sure that individuals who are in this line of work are not only working for the money but most especially is in it for safety.

Information on energy efficient windows - Double glazing windows ...

How can we benefit from double glazing? Double glazing helps you in numerous ways. It not only facilitates conserving energy, but it also retains heat and cold by acting as an insulator, reduces noise pollution, gives security and helps decrease condensation. What are the alternatives in case Double Glazing windows are inappropriate for my house?

A substitute for double glazing windows is secondary glazing. It works in a way that you fit a second glass pane in your existing windows. It's not as cost and energy efficient as double glazing ones, but it does allow you to save $ 85 a year on your heating bills and saves the environment by holding back 460 kg of carbon dioxide emissions.

Will I reduce my electricity bills by using Double gazing windows? Double glazing windows have a life of about 20 years, which implies that you get to save $ 3,300 over the time period. In case of replacing all the single glazed windows at your house with double gazing ones, you'll decrease your heating bill by $ 165. Not only this, you will also save the environment by holding back 680 kg of carbon dioxide secretions.

uPVC: What is it?

It is abbreviation for un-plasticized polyvinyl chloride. If you are looking for a lighter-on-the-pocket option for double glazing windows, uPVC would be an ideal material for you. It is the cheapest raw material used for double glazing and is also one of the most energy efficient options. They also require little maintenance with a soft wet cloth doing the job pretty well.

Can we use timber double glazing instead?

There are many options to choose from when deciding which material to use for your double glazing windows. For example there's wood and aluminum apart from uPVC. If you use timber, then that would be a greener decision because timber is a naturally renewable material. Moreover, it's much more pleasant to look at when compared to uPVC and hence many people prefer timber instead of the latter one. However, it needs proper maintenance to last for a long time.

What is WER?

WER stands for Window Energy Rating. This scheme is handled by the British Fenestration Rating Council (BFRC). Window dealers show the energy efficiency of their windows by using this scheme and rating it from A to G. In order to conform to the British regulations, the required minimum rating is C.

Is it absolutely important to get A-rated Windows?

The ranks A, B and C don't really have much of a difference in energy efficiency. Buying an A-rated window instead of B-rated one or getting a B-rated window instead of a C rated one would save you around 6.5 percent of your electricity bill. Hopefully, this guide would answer some of your questions regarding double glazing and help you sort your relevant problems.

Turkey says Syria opened fire on 2nd plane

(AP) ? Turkey's deputy prime minister says Syrian forces have opened fire on a second Turkish plane that was searching for the wreckage of a jet earlier shot down by Syria.

Bulent Arinc told a televised news conference Monday that Syrian forces opened fire on a CASA search and rescue plane following the downing of a RF-4E reconnaissance jet in international airspace on Friday. Arinc did not say whether the search and rescue plane was hit.

He says the Syrian side ceased fire after a warning from the Turkish military.

Meizu MX 4-core and Flyme OS 1.0 formally announced, available on June 30th

Meizu MX 4core

Forget that "MX Quad-core" moniker, because Meizu's just formally introduced its first quad core Android phone as the "MX 4-core" in Hong Kong, an event jam-packed with balloons and local celebrities (we really should've brought our sunglasses). For those who care, this is the first time ever for Meizu to collaborate with a carrier -- that being Hong Kong's PCCW, who's offering the HK$3,099 (US$400) 32GB model for free on various tariffs, while details are light on the HK$4,099 (US$530) 64GB version. Once the stage cleared we had a chance to take a closer look at the international variant of the MX 4-core. Aside from the disappearance of the Chinese logo above the screen plus the duller logo on the back (but accompanied by an extra capacity label), the 4-inch HSPA+ phone looks identical to its dual-core sibling. Additionally, Hong Kong and mainland China customers who pre-order between now and the launch on June 30th will get to pick a colored back crystal shell for free, including ivory white, milky lime, lilac purple and misty pink to replace the original white.

Software-wise Flyme -- Meizu's heavily customized Ice Cream Sandwich -- is also very similar to its Gingerbread predecessor, except for its slicker responsiveness (especially the camera app) and the odd interface tweaks here and there. There are also a few new features that are worth a mention: on top of the new native stopwatch, countdown timer and multi-segmented timed task lists, there's Flyme Voicemail which is essentially a native recorder for incoming calls that you reject (think of it as a neat alternative to conventional visual voicemail), and there's Flyme Message which is Meizu's take on SIP services like Whatsapp and Line. We shall dig deeper in our full review, but for now, you can check out a quick hands-on video after the break. And for those who still possess Meizu's older Android phones, we were told to expect Flyme to be delivered over the air in early July (as opposed to the original June date), so keep an eye out for that little update icon.

Update: We mentioned in our video that the China version of the MX 4-core doesn't come with the Play Store, but it turns out that we were mistaken. Hooray!

Update 2: By the way, it's pronounced "fly-me."

Bill Burton - Texas Hold'em A to Z: T is for Tilt

Poker is more than just a card game. Whenever you are dealing with people, you are also dealing with psychological factors. One pro player I know said that poker is a "people game" played with cards.

Your emotions as a player can have a large impact on your results when you play poker. They say that winning can be simple. All you have to do is always play your best game. This is easier said than done for most of us because we can be our own worst enemies at times.

There are several factors that contribute to our own state of mind. Whenever you play you should be well rested, alert and free from worrying about other problems in your life. If you bring these problems to the table with you, it can only interfere with your playing your "A" game.

Playing your best or "A" game means that you are paying attention to aspects of the game at all times. You are aware of what hands the other players are playing. You are concentrating on the reading the board. You know what the pot odds are when you call a bet. You also are playing premium starting hands.

You should also be confident of your own abilities. You don't have to be the best player in the world to win at Texas Hold'em. You just have to be better than the other players at the table. Some players can easily intimidate other players. This can happen if you find yourself over matched or in a ramming jamming game with a bunch of maniac players. You need to be aware of this. If for any reason you don't feel you can play your best game against the opponents at the table or you think you are in over your head, then you should get out and find a different game.

Your game can also be affected by the play at the table. Some nights you will sit for hour after hour folding hand after hand while other players are winning with pure garbage. You will be tempted to start loosening up your standards for starting hands. Don't do it! When you do you are getting away from your best game. If you are losing hand after hand or are suffering bad beats, you could go on tilt.

Tilt

Going on tilt is the expression used when players become upset and lose control of their emotions. Consequently they make poor decisions and play badly. A player on tilt will play any starting hands and call when they should not. If they have just suffered a bad beat, this could trigger them to go on tilt. They have lost money and are trying to make it back in one or two hands by playing overly aggressive with weak hands. Their play becomes very irrational. Like a child having a temper tantrum, they act out in anger, throwing chips in the pot trying to intimidate the other players. This will usually just lead to more losses.

Sometimes a player will get to the point where they just don't care how much money they have lost. Poker Expert Mike Caro calls this crossing the threshold of pain. A player may be down a few hundred dollars and then figure what the heck does another hundred matter. It will matter a lot the next day to most players.

Players can go on tilt or steam when they direct anger at another player. This particular opponent may have beaten them out of a hand and they are now on a vendetta to get that person. They will raise and re-raise in hopes of beating this player and getting their money back. This usually will backfire.

Players on tilt present a profitable situation for those at the table with a cool head. Oftentimes you will make money from one of these players. They will be throwing money around and it is up to you to catch it. Some may argue that it's wrong to kick someone when they're down, but a player on tilt is fair game in a casino poker game. Just make sure it is not you.

Controlling Your Emotions

In his book, Shut Up and Deal, Jessie May says, "Poker is a combination of luck and skill. People think mastering the skill part is hard, but they're wrong. The trick to poker is mastering the luck."

It is critical that you learn to keep your emotions in check when you play. Every player is going to suffer bad beats and losing hands. It's the luck of the draw and bad players do get lucky at times. It is the player who can remain calm in the face of adversity who will be the ultimate winner in the long run. All the poker experts advise learning how to play tilt-free poker. Most of the time, it is more than one incident that will set a player off. I think most of us know when we start to feel our emotions building up.

There are several things you can do when you feel you are on the verge of losing control. The first thing to do is take a deep breath. Breathing gets more oxygen to the brain and will help clear up your thinking. It is the first thing you are taught if you have ever tried any form of meditation or deep relaxation exercises. It is very simple and can be done right at the poker table without being too noticeable.

  1. Take in a deep breath through your nose. Count to four as you are doing this filling your lower diaphragm.
  2. Hold your breath while counting to four again.
  3. Slowly exhale through your mouth.
  4. Repeat this four times.

If deep breathing does not help sooth you, get up and leave the table for a few minutes. Take a walk to the rest room. If the walk does not calm you down, try washing your face and hands. A little cool water will help cool off your hot temper.

After taking a break, if you find that you are still not in control of your emotions then you have no choice but to leave the game. If the cause of your aggravation is one particular player, then you can switch tables if that is possible. If not, quit playing altogether. It is better to call it a night than to risk going on tilt.
