UCLA hires Steve Alford as new basketball coach

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? UCLA hired Steve Alford as basketball coach on Saturday, luring him from New Mexico days after he signed a new 10-year deal with the Lobos.

Athletic director Dan Guerrero said Alford is "the perfect fit for UCLA" because he connects with a new generation of players and brings an up-tempo and team-oriented style of play to Westwood.

The 48-year-old coach succeeds Ben Howland, who was fired last weekend after 10 years and a 233-107 record that included three consecutive Final Four appearances and four Pac-12 titles. The Bruins were 25-10 this season, which ended with a 20-point loss to Minnesota in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

Alford led New Mexico to a 29-6 record this season that included the Mountain West regular-season and tournament titles. But the Lobos were upset by Harvard in the second round of the NCAAs shortly after Alford's new deal with the school had been announced.

Alford will be introduced at UCLA on Tuesday.

"I have been so fortunate and blessed in my life, and an opportunity to lead one of the greatest programs in college basketball history is once-in-a-lifetime," he said in a statement.

Alford had a 155-52 record in six years at New Mexico, with the Lobos making three trips to the NCAA tournament. He was selected Mountain West coach of the year three times.

His other head coaching stints were at Iowa (2000-07), Missouri State (1996-99) and Manchester College (1992-95) in his native Indiana.

Alford is a legend in the Hoosier state, where he starred at Indiana University from 1984-87 under coach Bob Knight. The Hoosiers won the national championship in his senior year. He also played on the gold medal-winning 1984 U.S. Olympic basketball team in Los Angeles as a college sophomore. Knight coached that team.

Alford was drafted by the Dallas Mavericks in 1987 and played four years in the NBA before starting his head coaching career at tiny Manchester.

Drones over America: How unmanned fliers are already helping cops

It was getting dark, and the sheriff of Nelson County, N.D., was in a standoff with a family of suspected cattle rustlers. They were armed, and the last thing anybody wanted was a shoot out.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection, which monitors police radio chatter, offered to help. Their Predator was flying back to its roost at the Grand Forks Air Force base and could provide aerial support. Did the sheriff want the assist?

Yep.

"We were able to detect that one of the sons was sitting at the end of the driveway with a gun. We also knew that there were small children involved," Sheriff Kelly Janke told NBC News, remembering that tricky encounter in the early summer of 2011. "Someone would have gotten seriously injured if we had gone in on the farm that night." He decided to wait.

The next day, the drone gave them an edge again by helping them choose the safest moment to make a move. "We were able to surprise them ? took them into custody," Janke said. They also collected six stolen cows.

Rodney Brossart, the arrested farmer, sued the state, in part because of the cop's use of a drone. But a district judge ruled that the Predator's service was not untoward.

When advocates express concern about government drones threatening people's privacy, the Brossart case is one they bring up. It's one of the first instances of a flying robot doing a cop's dirty work, and this kind of intervention is likely to be more and more commonplace, as the FAA fulfills a congressional mandate to increase its granting of drone permits ? certificates of authorization, or COAs.

Cops and flying robots
At the moment, there are only 327 active COAs, all held by these organizations, and all for unarmed crafts, of course. A tiny sliver of these permits are in the hands of law enforcement agencies, and from them, we're seeing the first glimpses of drone use in policing and emergency response.

"The FAA has approved us to cover a 16-county area," Sheriff Bob Rost of Grand Forks County, N.D., said of their COA. "To look for missing children, to look for escaped criminals and in the case of emergencies." In the spring, they will use two mini-copter drones ? a trusty DraganFlyer X6 and an AeroVironment Qube ? to check on flooded farms.

The police department in Arlington, Texas, also recently got FAA clearance to fly their drones after two years of testing. The two battery-powered Leptron Avenger helicopter drones won't be used for high-speed chases or routine patrol, the department explains. In fact, the crafts will be driven in a truck to where they're needed, and when they're launched to scope out incidents, local air traffic control will be informed.

In Mesa County, Colo., the police department has used drones to find missing people, do an aerial landfill survey and help out firefighters at a burning church. For them, it's seen as a cost-cutting technology.

"It's the Wal-Mart version of what we'd normally get at Saks Fifth Avenue," said Benjamin Miller, who leads the drones program in Mesa County, comparing drones to manned helicopters that would otherwise give police officers help from the sky.

In Seattle, the police department received an FAA permit ? but had to give back its drones when the mayor banned their use, following protests in October 2012.

Protests and red tape
"Hasn't anyone heard of George Orwell's '1984'?" the Seattle Times quoted a protester as saying. "This is the militarization of our streets and now the air above us."

Protesters, not just in Seattle, seek more legal definition of what a drone can or can't do, and debate whether or not current laws sufficiently protect citizens from unauthorized surveillance and other abuses.

New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg thinks of police drones as an inevitability ? "We're going to have them," he recently said in a radio interview ? while those on the police (and drone) side say the fears are unfounded.

"This hysteria of [a drone] hovering outside your backyard taking a video of you smoking a joint, it's just that ? hysteria," said Al Frazier, an ex-cop from Los Angeles who is now an assistant professor of aeronautics at the University of North Dakota, and a deputy at the Grand Forks sheriff's office.

The reason the sky isn't lousy with drones already mostly has to do with red tape. The FAA's highly restricted drone application for government agencies is supposed to take about 60 days, though unofficially, we're told it's much longer. COAs are also very strict about where, when and by whom a drone is flown.

"I think there are many agencies who would like to use [drones] for public good, but they're stymied by the process," Frazier said.

That's likely to change ? and soon. Last February, Obama signed a mandate that encourages the FAA to let civil and commercial drones join the airspace by 2015. This will take new regulations from the FAA for safe commercial drone flight, and it may take some convincing of local anti-drone activists (who sometimes don't differentiate between drones great and small). It may even require the passing of a few new privacy laws.

Folks like Frazier and Miller don't see the permit process getting easier any time soon but eventually ? inevitably ? and for better or worse, your local police department will get its drone.

The 10 Highest-Paid Jobs in America

It's college acceptance letter season, and as students prep for four years of higher education, parents would do well to give them one piece of advice: go pre-med.

[ALSO: The 10 Lowest-Paid Jobs in America]

The Bureau of Labor Statistics has released its latest rundown of occupational statistics, which dates to 2012,and of the 10 highest-paid positions, nine require medical training. Anesthesiologists lead the field, making slightly more money putting patients to sleep than the people cutting those patients open. The only non-medical workers that make it onto the list are chief executives, who come in at No. 10 with around $177,000 in annual wages, or around 24 percent less than the anesthesiologists.

Below, the 10 highest-paid occupations in America as of May 2012:

Occupation Average Annual Wages
1. Anesthesiologists $232,830
2. Surgeons $230,540
3. Obstetricians and Gynecologists $216,760
4. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons $216,440
5. Internists, General $191,520
6. Orthodontists $186,320
7. Physicians and Surgeons, All Other $184,820
8. Family and General Practitioners $180,850
9. Psychiatrists $177,520
10. Chief Executives $176,840

[SEE: The 10 Most Overpaid Jobs]

That's perhaps unsurprising--everyone knows doctors are handsomely compensated--but what is striking is the extent to which medical occupations dominate the top of the wage ladder. You can still make a decent living even if you are not a doctor, as the list below of 10 top-paying non-medical professions shows:

Occupation Average Annual Wages
1. Chief Executives $176,840
2. Petroleum Engineers $147,470
3. Architectural and Engineering Managers $133,240
4. Lawyers $130,880
5. Natural Sciences Managers $130,400
6. Marketing Managers $129,870
7. Computer and Information Systems Managers $129,130
8. Airline Pilots, Copilots, and Flight Engineers $128,760
9. Financial Managers $123,260
10. Sales Managers $119,980

Florida's Adverse Possesion Law - WORLD Law Direct Forums

Quote:

A man I know died, with no will and left a house vacant that still has money owed on it. We would like to buy the house and the family gave us the keys to manage the property, but the bank can't do anything till it goes into foreclosure. How would Florida's Adverse Possession Law effect me, if I moved in since I have me the keys and the garage door opener, and permission to be in the house? Is there any kind of legal actions that can be taken towards me if I move into the house and take over the payments?

Unless you meet the statutory requirements for possession for the prescribed period of time, you will not be able to sustain a claim for title by adverse possession.

Some slick operators in Florida are moving into vacant homes in some stage of foreclosure claiming they are holding by "adverse possession." And are getting evicted by the sheriff. Police agencies are getting apprised and vigilant on these squatters and evicting, forcefully, if necessary.

Regardless of the deceased owner, the mortgage company has rights to the house by virtue of its mortgage and the foreclosure process. When one gives a mortgage, they mortgage company actually owns the house, the buyer buying it subject to timely paying. By foreclosing, the mortgage company clears the buyer out of his equity and title.

Forget the 'adverse possession' claim for you will not be allowed to squat that long. Trespasser is what you will be called. And treated.

Best Buy giving Samsung the Apple treatment with in-store mini-stores

Apple's Best Buy stores

Way back in the year 2011, the big box gadget retailer Best Buy surprised us with the launch of dedicated in-store miniature Apple stores, or if you prefer fancier Apple display sections with dedicated sales staff. The move has worked well for both Best Buy and Apple, offering prospective Apple customers and current Mac and iOS users more than one thousand new spots to go check out and pick up the latest gear from Cupertino.

Clearly no longer content playing second fiddle to Apple, Samsung's partnering with Best Buy to do the same, launching before the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S4 at the end of April. According to Geek.com, Best Buy's high traffic stores will be getting the Samsung mini-stores, with staff being told to start clearing out two aisles worth of space next to the popular in-store mobile departments.

Apparently there will be "large Samsung signage" and demonstration stations to show off the features of Samsung products. And like the Apple mini-stores, Best Buy employees will receive special training, though it appears that the entire mobile department staff will be receiving this training instead of select individuals like the Apple sections. If all goes according to plan, Samsung and Best Buy plan to eventually roll the mini-store expansion out to all of Best Buy's locations.

The move signals both Samsung's desire to push forward with their newfound swagger and the acceptance of the largest brick-and-mortar electronics retailer in the United States of the aforementioned swagger. It's worth giving some consideration to how Samsung's store will be adjacent to and staffed by the Best Buy mobile department, where the sales emphasis is almost exclusively on smartphones, with a handful of cellular tablets thrown in for good measure.

Samsung's success in the mobile market has been almost exclusively thanks to their Galaxy S line. Where consumers see Apple as a company that makes desktop computers, laptops, smartphones, and tablets, they see Samsung as televisions and smartphones. Setting up their store inside Best Buy is obviously a step to expand consumer recognition of what Samsung does, but by pairing it with Best Buy's powerful mobile presence they're also acknowledging what customers know and expect of Samsung.

It's also worth considering the benefits in the move for Best Buy. While they'll be losing significant floor space to the Samsung sections, this is a chain that's in the midst of an upheaval of sorts, faltering through a botched bid to take the company private and closing numerous stores over the past year to save costs. No doubt Samsung has paid well for the privilege of getting the same treatment as Apple, and that's money Best Buy desperately needs.

Ex-Sen. Craig loses bid to dismiss FEC lawsuit

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A federal judge refused on Thursday to dismiss a Federal Election Commission lawsuit that accuses former Sen. Larry Craig of misusing $217,000 in campaign funds for his legal defense after his arrest in a 2007 airport bathroom sex sting.

Craig had argued that the airport bathroom trip fell under his official duties as senator because he was traveling between Idaho and Washington for work, and therefore the legal fees could be paid for with campaign money.

But U.S. District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson rejected that argument. She wrote in her ruling that the charge against Craig didn't relate "to his conduct as a legislator, but only actions undertaken in the privacy and anonymity of a restroom stall." Jackson set a scheduling conference in the case for April 26.

The Idaho Republican was arrested by an undercover police officer at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. The officer said Craig tapped his feet and signaled under a stall divider that he wanted sex. Craig pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and paid a fine. After his arrest later became public, Craig tried unsuccessfully to reverse his conviction.

The FEC allows campaign funds to be used for legal expenses that were caused by a candidate's campaign or officeholder's duties, and determines that on a case-by-case basis. The commission sued Craig last year after concluding his legal problems had nothing to do with campaigning for federal office. The FEC is seeking an order requiring Craig to return the money to his campaign, along with fines of up to $6,500 against Craig and his campaign treasurer, Kaye O'Riordan.

"Senator Craig was arrested for, and pled guilty to, committing a criminal violation of Minnesota state law," Jackson wrote. "One does not need to be a United States congressman - or any sort of federal official - to be charged with this offense, and the arrest did not call into question his conduct as a legislator. Neither the charge nor the underlying conduct had anything to do with his performance of his official duties, so the legal expenses they generated were not incurred in connection with those duties."

In an email, Craig's lawyer, Andrew Herman, said, "We will assess the opinion and decide how to proceed after doing so."

I am new to this forum so sorry if I do something wrong. I have a RichTextBox1 and RichTextBox2 on my form. RichTextBox1 is for the user to enter some text. RichTextBox2 is not visible on form. I am trying to get the code to take the users text and put in RichTextBox2 to be able to save all the text each time the user hits saved button. I am not sure the best way to go about this. My code below saves the text ok the first time the saved button is hit but when the user adds more text and save again, it is adding the new text and the old text again. I just want it to save the new text only along with the old text but not add the old text again.

Private Sub Button1_Click(sender As System.Object, e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click If RichTextBox1.Text.Length > 0 Then RichTextBox2.AppendText(RichTextBox1.Text) If RichTextBox2.Text = RichTextBox1.Text Then MessageBox.Show("Text was Saved") End If Else 'do nothing End If End Sub

    Hello donna2002,
You will need to save the text from textbox2 in a string variable and clear the text from textbox2 before saving the text from textbox1. Thats what it sounds like from the way your explaining it. Try this

    Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click         If RichTextBox1.Text.Length > 0 Then             Dim txt As String = RichTextBox2.Text             RichTextBox2.Clear()             RichTextBox2.Text = RichTextBox1.Text             If RichTextBox2.Text = RichTextBox1.Text Then                 MessageBox.Show("Text was Saved")             End If         End If     End Sub

    :bigsmile:/>

Thank you IronRazer for the reply. Yes, that does work but maybe I am not explaining too well. That code does work until the user deletes something or clears his text to start over. I need the RichTextBox2 to always keep the text when the save button is clicked even if the user clears his or does whatever it still needs to keep the old text and add only the new text to RichTextBox2. I am probably not explaining it well. In other words I need both RTB to compare to each other and if there is new text added to RTB1 then add only that text to RTB2 along with what is already in RTB2. I have tried different ways but keep getting RTB2 with too much text adding the old and new text together and having duplicates of the same text when the user only entered it once. I hope that clears it up some. I am not good explaining myself.

Teens' struggles with peers forecast long-term adult problems

Teens' struggles with peers forecast long-term adult problems [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 28-Mar-2013

Teenagers' struggles to connect with their peers in the early adolescent years while not getting swept along by negative peer influences predict their capacity to form strong friendships and avoid serious problems even ten years later. Those are the conclusions of a new longitudinal study by researchers at the University of Virginia that appears in the journal Child Development.

"Overall, we found that teens face a high-wire act with their peers," explains Joseph P. Allen, Hugh P. Kelly Distinguished Professor at the University of Virginia, who led the study. "They need to establish strong, positive connections with them while at the same time establishing independence in resisting deviant peer influences. Those who don't manage this have significant problems as much as a decade later."

Researchers followed about 150 teens over a 10-year period (starting at age 13 and continuing to 23) to learn about the long-term effects of their peer struggles early in adolescence. They gathered information from multiple sourcesthe teens themselves, their parents and peers, and by observing teens' later interactions with romantic partners. The teens comprised a racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse group.

Teens who had trouble connecting well with their peers in early adolescence had difficulty establishing close friendships in young adulthood. Teens who didn't connect well at 13 also had more difficulty managing disagreements in romantic relationships as adults.

Teens who had trouble establishing some autonomy and independence with peers (especially with respect to minor forms of deviance such as shoplifting and vandalism) were found to be at higher risk for problems with alcohol and substance use, and for illegal behavior, almost a decade later.

Conversely, teens who were seen as desirable companionsthose deemed empathetic, able to see things from different perspectives and control their impulses, and having a good sense of humorwere more likely to have positive relationships in young adulthood.

Teens who were able to establish some autonomy vis a vis peers' influences were more likely to avoid problematic behavior in young adulthood, with teens who showed they were able to think for themselves in the face of negative peer influences using less alcohol as early adults and having fewer problems with alcohol and substance abuse as young adults. But teens who were seen as desirable companions were more likely to have higher levels of alcohol use in early adulthood and future problems associated with alcohol and substance use.

"The findings make it clear that establishing social competence in adolescence and early adulthood is not a straightforward process, but involves negotiating challenging and at times conflicting goals between peer acceptance and autonomy with regard to negative peer influences," Allen notes.

"Teaching teens how to stand up for themselves in ways that preserve and deepen relationshipsto become their own persons while still connecting to othersis a core task of social development that parents, teachers, and others can all work to promote," adds Allen.

Teens who managed both of these goals simultaneouslyconnecting with peers while retaining their autonomywere rated by their parents as being most competent overall by age 23. There is a positive pathway through the peer jungle of early adolescence, says Allen, but it is a tricky one for many teens to find and traverse.

Yoga And Mental Health | Better Innovations Blog

Yoga tones the body and improves flexibility. Those results aren?t a (wait for it?) stretch, when you?re tucking your legs behind your head and balancing on one foot for minutes on end. But did you know that yoga also benefits mental health and has lasting positive effects on brain chemistry and emotional balance? Read on to find out how every ?Ohm? brings you closer to clarity.

One of the tenets of yoga (including hatha, vinyasa, and any type in between) is focused breathing. Yoga practitioners believe that controlled breathing can calm the mind and prepare the body to explore its capabilities. The rhythm of inhale and exhale creates a meter by which your body can regulate itself, and a constant to focus on as you strain to reach difficult poses. The simple act of breathing can slow down a racing brain and bring you into the present moment. Placing yourself in that quiet place of non-stress on a regular basis promotes mental health on and off the mat.

The constant flow of movement involved in yoga promotes circulation, bringing more oxygen to the brain and increasing the production of endorphins. This has very positive minimizing effects on symptoms of depression and anxiety. Not only that ? short-term memory, mental acuity, multi-tasking, and concentration all show an upswing thanks to downward-facing dog.

Sleep quality will also improve as well with regular yoga practice. As we all know, a good night?s sleep is one of our most potent weapons in fighting stress, health issues, aging, and even weight loss. Studies have shown marked benefits to length and quality of sleep thanks to yoga, and as a result, better alertness during the day.

Even more serious mental health issues can be addressed in yoga. Many studies, particularly a recent one at Harvard, have proven that amateur yogis have a decreased overall response to stress and are less prone to stress-based symptoms and illnesses. Soldiers experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), are likely to find relief from yoga; by encouraging reflection, control, and healing in a non-stigmatized environment, they can find coping mechanisms for their trauma and become better equipped to deal with stimuli in the outside world.

Additionally, it has been found that adults suffering from schizophrenia were able to better handle their illness with yoga skills. The meditative aspect helps to decrease aggressive tendencies, promote willingness to take medication, and supply sufferers with the focus to manage their various symptoms. Binge-eating and other self-destructive eating behaviors also decrease when paired with yoga, a probable side effect of strengthening the healthy body and finding more mental peace.

Best of all, clearing the mind has positive secondary effects on the body as well. Twisting your body requires muscle relaxation and focus, which can lower your blood pressure and improve your heart health. Your improved posture and breathing will have lasting good effects on your bone health. And finding that special ?me? time, an oasis of quiet in your busy life helps to center you and help define personal goals ? even beyond clearing your body and mind.

Gene therapy may aid failing hearts

Mar. 25, 2013 ? In an animal study, researchers at the University of Washington show that it was possible to use gene therapy to boost heart muscle function. The finding suggests that it might be possible to use this approach to treat patients whose hearts have been weakened by heart attacks and other heart conditions.

Led by University of Washington (UW) Professor and Vice Chair of Bioengineering Michael Regnier and Dr. Chuck Murry, director of the Center for Cardiovascular Biology and co-director of the Institute for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine at UW, the study appears online today in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

Normally, muscle contraction is powered by a molecule, the nucleotide called Adenosine-5'-triphosphate (ATP). Other naturally occurring nucleotides can also power muscle contraction, but, in most cases, they have proven to be less effective than ATP.

In an earlier study of isolated muscle, however, Regnier, Murry and colleagues had found that one naturally occurring molecule, called 2 deoxy-ATP (dATP), was actually more effective than ATP in powering muscle contraction, increasing both the speed and force of the contraction, at least over the short-term.

In the new PNAS study, the researchers wanted to see whether this effect could be sustained. To do this, they used genetic engineering to create a strain of mice whose cells produced higher-than-normal levels of an enzyme called Ribonucleotide Reductase, which converts the precursor of ATP, adenosine-5'-diphosphate or ADP, to dADP, which, in turn, is rapidly converted to dATP.

"This fundamental discovery, that dATP can act as a 'super-fuel' for the contractile machinery of the heart, or myofilaments, opens up the possibility to treat a variety of heart failure conditions," Regnier said. "An exciting aspect of this study and our ongoing work is that a relatively small increase in dATP in the heart cells has a big effect on heart performance."

The researchers found that increased production of the enzyme Ribonucleotide Reductase increased the concentration of dATP within heart cells approximately tenfold, and even though this level was still less than one to two percent of the cell's total pool of ATP, the increase led to a sustained improvement in heart muscle function, with the genetically engineered hearts contracting more quickly and with greater force.

"It looks as though we may have stumbled on an important pathway that nature uses to regulate heart contractility," Murry added. "The same pathway that heart cells use to make the building blocks for DNA during embryonic growth makes dATP to supercharge contraction when the adult heart is mechanically stressed."

Importantly, the elevated dATP effect was achieved without imposing additional metabolic demands on the cells, suggesting the modification would not harm the cell's functioning over the long-term.

The finding, the authors write, suggest that treatments that elevate dATP levels in heart cells may prove to be an effective treatment for heart failure.

    Pageonce

How much help do you need managing your money? If the answer is "only a little, just the big picture, I don't want to get hung up on the details," then Pageonce (free) may be a useful tool to add to your money-management arsenal. While this review focuses on Pageonce's website, where you can manage your free Pageonce account, there is also a Pageonce iPhone app and Pageonce Android app, which I personally find more valuable than the online version. Why? Because the kind of information Pageonce provides becomes truly valuable if you're on the go and need to make a sudden correction to your finances to stay in the clear, such as paying a bill that's due imminently. When you're in front of a full computer, it seems silly to rely on Pageonce when you can just log directly into your bank account or bill provider's website and take care of the problem there.

When it comes to managing money, I'd rather have an app that gives me more than I need rather than shortchanging me, a big reason Mint (free, 5 stars)? is our Editors' Choice and not Pageonce. Mint shows line-item details of all your purchases and transactions, and automatically categorizes them for you to show your overall spending habits, while also providing excellent controls should you want to override the automation. It also looks at the interest rates on your accounts and suggests other financial houses that can give you a better deal. Pageonce doesn't have any of these value-adding services.

For centralized bill pay, you could also use Doxo (free, 3.5 stars), which not only gives you tools to management payments to dozens of utility and service providers, but also saves copies of your previous bills. Doxo's other features make it more of an online filing cabinet than a money-management system, because it provides additional storage for saving other important household documents in one place. Pageonce, on the other hand, focuses only on account balances and bill payment.

    Pageonce Layout and Features
When you set up a free Pageonce account?and note that while some features previous were locked behind a $4.99 per month Gold membership, all of Pageonce is now free?the site prompts you to connect your financial accounts. That's the first step in most money-management apps, particularly when they're cloud-based, as Pageonce, Mint, and Mvelopes (free to $9.95 per month, 2 stars) are. If you'd prefer to work entirely offline, YNAB ($60, 3 stars), which stands for You Need a Budget, gives you that option, although the desktop software can hook into your bank accounts electronically if you choose?but it's not required.

Pageonce supports all major financial institutions, and I had no problem connecting to any of my checking, savings, retirement, and credit card accounts. I also linked my ISP (Time Warner) to get information about my internet bill, and browsed the list of other service providers, which include insurance companies, utility providers, and lenders such as Sallie Mae and ACS ? Education. It's a well-rounded selection, with "travel" being the oddball category. Yes, you can connect you travel loyalty programs to see at a glance how many points you have with various companies.

If you want to connect to a Paypal, however, you have to have a Paypal Business account. If you have funds hanging out in a personal Paypal account set aside for spending, Pageonce can't count that money.

Once you have your accounts connected, you'll see an overview pane at the left of the screen that shows how much cash you have. Below that line are Payments Due, Credit Cards Debt, and Investments. Like I said, it's a quick and dirty and balance sheet, not a full register of all your transactions. Clicking on any of those selections shows to the right of it one more level of detail, but it's still pretty well zoomed out. For example, my tab for Credit Cards Debt lists each line of credit I have on file and shows in a bar graph how much I owe against how much credit I have by provider. It also lists out by provider the next minimum amount due and date, and the APR. The very top of this section shows a credit card summary: total minimum payments due across all cards, total current balance, and total available credit.

Moving further into the site, you can exit the overview page and dive into your accounts, alerts, and a bill pay section. In the accounts area, you can see some recent line item transactions, but they're not qualified by tags or other information as they are in Mint. My checking and savings accounts showed transactions dating from before I set up my Pageonce account, while my credit cards only delivered the most recent transactions since the last billing cycle. Pageonce doesn't give you any tools to customize how many line items you see or from when (e.g., calendar month only, year to date, etc.).

Alerts, by default, flag when an upcoming payment is due, and you can't customize these either. You can, however, customize the "notifications" you get by email, but that's in your Settings under a tab called Notifications.

The Bill Pay section gives you one central place to pay all your connected credit card bills, which may be a resounding reason to use the Pageonce website. Mint has reminders for upcoming credit card bills but does not connect to other kinds of bills. In practice, for me this was a moot point, as nearly all my bills are set up to automatically charge a credit card. I almost never initiate payments anymore. It's more important for me to see that a payment is scheduled (which my bill service companies all do via email).

Just to give it a whirl, though, I tried to pay off an upcoming credit card balance with one of my synced checking accounts. I immediately hit a screen asking for my full checking account number and routing number, which are the same steps I'd go through the first time I set up automatic bill pay right on the credit card website. I didn't see much of an added convenience of doing it on Pageonce.

    Security
Pageonce has good security measures in place to keep your finances secure. You can't transfer money using Pageonce, so no one else can move your money through this service either. All your account info is kept secure. The site logs you out automatically if you leave the computer idle for a few minutes. And the site is VeriSign Secured (i.e., tested and approved by Norton) and TrustE approved.

    Black or Red
The level of detail any one person wants or needs regarding their personal finance is largely a matter of preference. The "right" financial app for you depends on your total net worth, the way you budget your money, level of debt, spending habits, and history of paying bills on time and in full. While Pageonce isn't capable of doing very much, it does show exactly?and no more than?what some people need: account balances, upcoming due dates for bills, net worth.

My hunch, however, is that most people need more guidance and insight into where they spend their money day in and day out. If all you want is the big picture of your financial situation and the ability to pay bills in a pinch, Pageonce works as advertised, although it has more valuable as a mobile app. For everyone else, Mint has more answers about what to actually do with your money and debt.

Cleverly designed vaccine blocks H5 avian influenza in models

    Tuesday, March 26, 2013

Until now most experimental vaccines against the highly lethal H5N1 avian influenza virus have lacked effectiveness. But a new vaccine has proven highly effective against the virus when tested in both mice and ferrets. It is also effective against the H9 subtype of avian influenza. The research is published online ahead of print in the Journal of Virology.

The strength of the new vaccine is that it uses attenuated, rather than "killed" virus. (Killed viruses are broken apart with chemicals or heat, and they are used because they are safer than attenuated viruses.) Killed virus vaccines against avian influenza are injected into the bloodstream, whereas this vaccine is given via nasal spray, thus mimicking the natural infection process, stimulating a stronger immune response.

The danger of current attenuated virus vaccines is that they might exchange dangerous genetic material with garden variety influenza viruses of the sort that strike annually, potentially rendering a lethal but very hard to transmit influenza virus, such as H5, easily transmissible among humans. To mitigate those dangers, the study authors, led by Daniel Perez of the University of Maryland, came up with an ingenious design. Influenza viruses carry their genetic material in eight "segments," explains coauthor and University of Maryland colleague Troy Sutton. When viruses reassort, they exchange segments. But each segment is unique, all eight are needed, and the viruses are unfit if they contain more than eight segments.

The vaccine is based on an attenuated version of the H9 virus, with an H5 gene added into one of the H9 virus' segments, to confer immunity to the H5 virus. Segment 8, which is composed of the so-called NS1 and NS2 genes, was split apart, and the NS2 gene was moved into segment 2, adjacent to the polymerase gene, which copies the virus' genetic material during replication. Placing NS2 next to the polymerase gene slowed its function, interfering with the virus' replication. That makes the vaccine safer.

The next step was to engineer the H5 gene into the vaccine. It was inserted into segment 8, where the NS2 gene had been.

Another aspect of the new vaccine's design makes it safer still, by rendering successful reassortment less likely. Both NS1 and NS2 are needed for viral replication. Since the two genes are now separated into different segments, any reassortment will have to include both segments, instead of just segment 8, in order for a reassortant virus to be viable. This greatly reduced the probability of successful reassortment.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes avian influenza subtypes H5, H7, and H9 as potential pandemic viruses, because they all have in rare instances infected humans, and because they circulate in wild birds. Single reassortants could be sufficient to breach the species barrier, and since they do not circulate among us, we lack any immunity. Moreover, H5 is unusually lethal, having killed roughly half of those few it is confirmed to have infected.
