I lip-synced at the '96 Super Bowl, admits Vanessa Williams

Vanessa Williams in 1996 as she sang the National Anthem. (Getty Images)Beyonce, you?re not alone. Vanessa Williams has got your back!

In a new interview from New Orleans on Thursday, Williams tells ?omg! Insider?s? Kevin Frazier that she too lip-synced the National Anthem when she performed at the 1996 Super Bowl, which some have called one of the top renditions ever.

Vanessa Williams and omg! Insider's Kevin Frazier in New Orleans.
?Whitney [Houston] had done hers before me and the network wants you to pre-record, so you pre-record with your orchestra,? the former ?Desperate Housewives? star explained. ?You lay down the track. Then when it?s time to perform you lip sync, because you?ve got flyovers with the jets, you?ve got pyrotechnics behind you and you want to make sure that the sound is consistent. And that?s what the network asks of you. So, there?s no ?Can she sing it? Can she not? Is it live or is it not?? There?s no way you?re gonna get a live orchestra on the field at the same time and that?s part of what they want as a network.?

Williams? performance that day ? just before the Dallas Cowboys beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 27-17 ? also honored the astronauts of the Challenger space shuttle, which had exploded 10 years earlier, killing all aboard. ?It was one of the highlights of my life," she says. "And when you walk out on that field, it?s a sea of color and people. It?s surreal and an honor too!"

Job growth likely modest but steady in January

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Hiring by employers likely held steady in January, pointing to modest growth in the economy despite worries that budget battles in Washington could derail the recovery.

Nonfarm payrolls are expected to have risen 160,000, a marginal step up from December's 155,000 job gain, according to a Reuters survey of economists. The unemployment rate is seen holding steady at 7.8 percent.

Many economists think companies would create more jobs if Washington could resolve a seemingly intractable fight over how to tame the federal budget deficit.

Politicians reached a deal this month to soften the blow from a so-called "fiscal cliff" of austerity measures, but the government is still on track to hurt the economy by slashing spending in March.

A deadlock over spending plans that could lead most government operations to shut down in March also looms, as does the possibility the government might default later this later year and trigger another recession.

"The removal of the uncertainty posed by the fiscal cliff is unlikely to prompt a surge in hiring when there remains so much political uncertainty," said Paul Dales, an economist at Capital Economics in London.

The Labor Department will release the January jobs data on Friday at 8:30 a.m. (1330 GMT).

The recent pace of hiring has been too slow to quickly bring down the country's jobless rate or convince the Federal Reserve, which meets on Wednesday, to abandon its easy money policies.

If economists are on the mark, January would mark another month of slow but steady gains in the long recovery from the 2007-09 recession, reinforcing expectations the Fed will continue buying assets into next year in a bid to lower interest rates and boost the economy. A report due on Wednesday is expected to show economic growth slowed in the fourth quarter.

Still, the expected payroll reading would match the average gains posted over the six months through December, suggesting some of the economy's underlying momentum carried over into the New Year.

Indeed, many economic indicators have pointed to growing economic strength. Retail sales were buoyant in December, and the number of new jobless claims has recently fallen to the lowest in five years.

In addition, a mild winter could be helping to boost employment at construction sites.

"Unseasonably mild weather and improving jobless claims point to an above-trend result," economists at Morgan Stanley, who forecast 185,000 new jobs in January, said in a research note.

Manufacturing employment likely grew by 10,000 jobs in January, according to the Reuters poll. Average hourly earnings are seen edging higher and the length of the average workweek is seen steady.

As part of the employment report, the government will release revisions to recent payroll estimates based on analysis of tax receipts from March 2012. This data could help explain why the U.S. jobless rate fell more than many expected in 2012 given lackluster growth in payrolls, said Jim O'Sullivan, an economist at High Frequency Economics in Valhalla, New York.

On average, payrolls added 153,000 jobs a month last year, a level many economists consider just enough to keep up with population growth and not enough to explain the 0.5 percentage point fall in the jobless rate during the year.

In a preliminary estimate given in September, the Labor Department said the economy likely created 386,000 more jobs than initially thought in the 12 months through March last year.

With the data on Friday, the government will provide a firmer reading on the employment level for March 2012 and use its new understanding on the health of the labor market to revise its figures for other months as well.

A big upward revision of payroll gains, especially in the second half of 2012, would point to a stronger trend in job creation, helping to explain why the jobless rate tumbled last year and perhaps making future declines more plausible.

"If the trend in employment is 180,000 or 185,000 a month instead of 160,000 a month, it's certainly easier to get the unemployment rate down," said O'Sullivan.

Rude behavior at work is increasing and affects the bottom line

Jan. 30, 2013 ? Rudeness at work is rampant, and it's on the rise. In 2011, half of the workers surveyed by Professors Christine Porath of Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business and Christine Pearson of Thunderbird School of Global Management said they were treated rudely at least once a week -- up from a quarter in 1998. New research from Porath and Pearson shows the tangible cost of this bad behavior.

Through a poll of 800 managers and employees in 17 industries, Porath and Pearson discovered just how people's reactions play out. Among workers who've been on the receiving end of incivility:

? 48% intentionally decreased their work effort ? 47% intentionally decreased the time spent at work ? 38% intentionally decreased the quality of their work ? 80% lost work time worrying about the incident ? 63% lost work time avoiding the offender ? 66% said that their performance declined ? 78% said that their commitment to the organization declined ? 12% said that they left their job because of the uncivil treatment ? 25% admitted to taking their frustration out on customers

Experiments and other reports offer additional insights about the effects of incivility. Here are some examples of what can happen.

    1) Creativity suffers -- In an experiment conducted with Amir Erez, a professor of management at the University of Florida, participants who were treated rudely by other subjects were 30% less creative than others in the study.

    2) Performance and team spirit deteriorate -- Survey results and interviews indicate that simply witnessing incivility has negative consequences. In one experiment, witnesses to incivility were less likely than others to help out, even when the person they'd be helping had no apparent connection to the uncivil person.

    3) Customers turn away -- According to a survey of 244 consumers, disrespectful behavior by employees makes people uncomfortable, and they're quick to walk out without making a purchase.

    4) Managing incidents is expensive -- According to a study conducted by Accountemps and reported in Fortune, managers and executives at Fortune 1,000 firms spend 13% percent of their work time -- the equivalent of seven weeks a year -- mending employee relationships and otherwise dealing with the aftermath of incivility.

Singapore where to bet Top Email Marketing Tips To Increase Your ...

Make your subject lines intriguing. An email that has a topic line that arouse the customer?s curiosity is more likely to be read rather than one boring and generic line. Make your subject lines scream of worthy news or entice with serious discounts. Capture all eyes with that one line.

Beware of including attachments to your email marketing! Mass emails with attachments are instantly suspected as spam by most spam filters. As well, these days many types of computer malware and viruses are carried in email attachments, and people are aware of this. Your email is in jeopardy of being immediately deleted when they see an attachment without even being read.

Use plain text and hyperlinks in your email messages, and save the images and Flash animation for your web page. Many email services now filter out images and animations in the name of consumer safety, meaning that your lists may not even see your carefully-crafted images. Plain text messages are guaranteed to go through intact, and then the images on your website will catch your viewers.

Subscribe to the email marketing campaigns of your competition. When you know what is already out there, you can identify things to do differently. At the very least, you know where the bar of expectations is set in terms of what readers are looking for as to the benefits they want.

The more personal they are. The better people will respond to them. Do your best to communicate in a way that doesn?t scream ?Advertising.? Speak in a friendly one-on-one style with an amicable tone. By using your emails in a respectful, familiar manner, you will be able to make use of the most personal advertising method, there is.

Include an audit memo on the follow-up emails that you send to your clients. Paste a link on your message that tells them to download this right now. They need to be connected in some way, for example by having each message end with a tip or a testimonial.

Try following up an email to your customers with a notice that tells them not to procrastinate. Insert a suggestion that tells them to purchase now onto the reply. The ending could tell them not to miss this incredible opportunity by waiting. Instead, they should act now to reap the full benefits.

A good business person knows when to close the deal. Nothing is worse than having all the right tools but closing the deal at the wrong time. You must know when to make an offer, and you must earn the right to make that offer. Making the offer at the wrong time will be detrimental to the success of your email marketing campaign.

Now that you have come to the end of this article, you are ready to start marketing your product or business using proven email marketing methods. Gas leaks proves fatal at Samsung chip plant in Korea

A maintenance contractor called out to fix a hydrofluoric acid leak at a Samsung plant has died after being taken to hospital, according to Korean media. Four others were injured by the lethal gas but have reportedly been discharged by doctors. The factory in question is located within South Korea, which isn't known for the sort of lax safety standards that plague workers in China, but AsiaE reports the accident will nevertheless be investigated to find out if any laws were breached in the way the leak was handled, and if the killed contractor was wearing the right protective gear. For the sake of context, it's worth remembering that even state-of-the-art installations can be prone to accidents -- in 2011, for example, seven American workers were injured in an explosion at Intel's semiconductor fab in Arizona.

PThe rise in risky, non-traditional sexual relations that marked the swinging '60s actually began as much as a decade earlier, during the conformist '50s, suggests an analysis recently published by the Archives of Sexual Behavior.

"It's a common assumption that the sexual revolution began with the permissive attitudes of the 1960s and the development of contraceptives like the birth control pill," notes Emory University economist Andrew Francis, who conducted the analysis. "The evidence, however, strongly indicates that the widespread use of penicillin, leading to a rapid decline in syphilis during the 1950s, is what launched the modern sexual era."

As penicillin drove down the cost of having risky sex, the population started having more of it, Francis says, comparing the phenomena to the economic law of demand: When the cost of a good falls, people buy more of the good.

"People don't generally think of sexual behavior in economic terms," he says, "but it's important to do so because sexual behavior, just like other behaviors, responds to incentives."

Syphilis reached its peak in the United States in 1939, when it killed 20,000 people. "It was the AIDS of the late 1930s and early 1940s," Francis says. "Fear of catching syphilis and dying of it loomed large."

Penicillin was discovered in 1928, but it was not put into clinical use until 1941. As World War II escalated, and sexually transmitted diseases threatened the troops overseas, penicillin was found to be an effective treatment against syphilis.

"The military wanted to rid the troops of STDs and all kinds of infections, so that they could keep fighting," Francis says. "That really sped up the development of penicillin as an antibiotic."

Right after the war, penicillin became a clinical staple for the general population as well. In the United States, syphilis went from a chronic, debilitating and potentially fatal disease to one that could be cured with a single dose of medicine.

From 1947 to 1957, the syphilis death rate fell by 75 percent and the syphilis incidence rate fell by 95 percent. "That's a huge drop in syphilis. It's essentially a collapse," Francis says.

In order to test his theory that risky sex increased as the cost of syphilis dropped, Francis analyzed data from the 1930s through the 1970s from state and federal health agencies. Some of the data was only available on paper documents, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) digitized it at the request of Francis.

For his study, Francis chose three measures of sexual behavior: The illegitimate birth ratio; the teen birth share; and the incidence of gonorrhea, a highly contagious sexually transmitted disease that tends to spread quickly.

"As soon as syphilis bottoms out, in the mid- to late-1950s, you start to see dramatic increases in all three measures of risky sexual behavior," Francis says.

While many factors likely continued to fuel the sexual revolution during the 1960s and 1970s, Francis says the 1950s and the role of penicillin have been largely overlooked. "The 1950s are associated with prudish, more traditional sexual behaviors," he notes. "That may have been true for many adults, but not necessarily for young adults. It's important to recognize how reducing the fear of syphilis affected sexual behaviors."

A few physicians sounded moralistic warnings during the 1950s about the potential for penicillin to affect behavior. Spanish physician Eduardo Martinez Alonso referenced Romans 6:23, and the notion that God uses diseases to punish people, when he wrote: "The wages of sin are now negligible. One can almost sin with impunity, since the sting of sinning has been removed."

Such moralistic approaches, equating disease with sin, are counterproductive, Francis says, stressing that interventions need to focus on how individuals may respond to the cost of disease.

He found that the historical data of the syphilis epidemic parallels the contemporary AIDS epidemic. "Some studies have indicated that the development of highly active antiretroviral therapy for treating HIV may have caused some men who have sex with men to be less concerned about contracting and transmitting HIV, and more likely to engage in risky sexual behaviors," Francis says.

"Policy makers need to take into consideration behavioral responses to changes in the cost of disease, and implement strategies that are holistic and longsighted," he concludes. "To focus exclusively on the defeat of one disease can set the stage for the onset of another if preemptive measures are not taken."

'Argo' Wins PGA Award: Ben Affleck Drama Named Best 2012 Film By Producers Guild

"Argo" took a big step toward becoming only the fourth film in the history of the Academy Awards to win Best Picture without a Best Director nomination as it captured the Producers Guild Award on Saturday night.

Ben Affleck, George Clooney and Grant Heslov won the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures at the Producers Guild Awards, beating the producers of "Lincoln," "Silver Linings Playbook," "Zero Dark Thirty," "Les Miserables," "Life of Pi," "Django Unchained," "Skyfall," "Moonrise Kingdom" and "Beasts of the Southern Wild."

"I'm really surprised. I'm not even in the PGA," Affleck joked while accepting the award. "I am still acting."

For Oscar experts, the PGA award is a significant Academy Awards precursor: Only seven times in 24 years has the Darryl F. Zanuck winner failed to capture Best Picture at the Oscars. The last five films to take home the PGA award also won on Oscar night.

"Lincoln" was a presumed favorite for the PGA award, alongside "Silver Linings Playbook." Both films, as well as "Argo," are up for Best Ensemble at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, which is the SAG equivalent of Best Picture. The SAG awards, another strong precursor, will be handed out on Sunday evening.

Egypt court sentences 21 to death for stadium disaster

CAIRO (Reuters) - An Egyptian court on Saturday sentenced to death 21 people found guilty of involvement in the Port Said soccer stadium disaster in which 74 people died last year.

The ruling could help reduce prospects of fresh clashes on Egypt's turbulent streets. Soccer fans and families of those killed had threatened more violence if the punishments did not satisfy them, and many had demanded the accused be executed.

The ruling followed nine deaths during protests nationwide on Friday and early on Saturday, held to mark two years since Egypt's revolution forced strongman Hosni Mubarak from power and to accuse President Mohamed Mursi and his Islamist allies of reimposing authoritarian rule.

The judge, Sobhy Abdel Maguid, read out a list of 21 names "referred to the Mufti", a phrase used to denote a death verdict as all such sentences must be reviewed by Egypt's top religious authority.

Seventy-three people have been charged with involvement in the February 1, 2012 disaster at the end of a match between Cairo's Al Ahly and al-Masry, the local side.

Spectators were crushed when panicked crowds tried to escape from the stadium after a post-match pitch invasion by supporters of al-Masry. Others fell or were thrown from terraces, witnesses said.

Many of those who died were supporters of Al Ahly.

The verdicts for others accused will be announced on March 9, said the judge, who had called for calm in the court before and during the reading of the ruling.

In response to the sentences, supporters gathered at Al Ahly club in Cairo cheered. In the courtroom on the outskirts of Cairo, families of victims clapped and some wept with emotion.

"God is greatest" one shouted, while others held up pictures of the victims.

People gathered near the Port Said prison where most of the suspects were held. State television reported the sound of gunshots and said police fired tear gas in the area.

Sensu Brush Portable Artist Brush and Stylus

    • Pros

      Elegant design. Responsive brush.

    • Cons Not as precise as a pressure-sensitive stylus.
    • Bottom Line

The Sensu Brush combines a very capable capacitive touch screen stylus with an intuitive paintbrush that works on the very same touch screen.

    By Will Greenwald

The iPad and other tablets have plenty of art apps that let talented hands draw on their capacitive touch screens. Sure, you could use a finger, but a stylus is a much better choice. Better still is a capacitive-touch-screen-compatible brush like the Sensu Brush ($39.99 direct). It's similar in concept to the Nomad Compose, as a stylus with an actual brush that works on screens, but it offers a much more attractive design and a more comfortable way to draw on your tablet's display.

The Sensu is simple and elegant, with a 3.6-inch-long cap/handle that conceals whichever of the two included capacitive tips you're not using. Closed, it's a 4.5-inch touch screen stylus with the standard black, rubberized, slightly spongy tip we've seen in many styli before. It's solid and just long enough to use like a pen, and alone, it's a suitable, if slightly overpriced, as a capacitive touch-screen stylus. If you pull it out of the cap and flip it around, though, the stylus completely transforms.

With the stylus hidden securely in the long cap, the Sensu grows to 7.2 inches and gains a slender, rubberized grip and a bristle paintbrush that works on your tablet's touch screen. The grip and the long cap lets the Sensu rest comfortably in your hand like an actual paintbrush, and the tip itself feels perpetually flexible, like it was a real paintbrush freshly dipped in water.

    Sensu Brush

The paintbrush tip felt soft and responsive when I tested it on an iPad. I did some doodling in ArtRage, and while there was some slight lag in the drawings as I performed fast brushstrokes, the app followed my motions perfectly. Since it's a capacitive touch screen, the iPad's display (and other mobile devices' touch screens, with which the Sensu can also work) can only detect inputs as points, not as entire areas. So I couldn't "paint" in the same way I could with an actual brush; the point the touch screen detected was consistently in the center of the brush regardless of whether I was tapping the screen or pressing down to fan out the bristles. This is a limitation of the screen technology, and not a problem specific to the Sensu.

If you want a capacitive touch screen stylus specifically for art and don't want to deal with the extra price and hassle of a pressure-sensitive stylus, the Sensu Brush is one of the best styli you can find. It feels good, looks good, and easily switches between standard stylus and paintbrush. If you just want to tap and sketch, the $25 Pogo Sketch Pro is our top choice for non-professional stylus, and if you want greater responsiveness, an electronic, pressure-sensitive stylus like the Adonit Jot Touch is a better choice (but it's twice as expensive).

Parker gets cut, returns to lead Spurs past Mavs

DALLAS (AP) ? Tony Parker returned from a cut above the same eye he injured in a nightclub incident last summer and scored 23 points to lead the San Antonio Spurs to a 113-107 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Friday night.

Parker missed about a quarter in the first half when he took three stitches above his left eye after a collision with Elton Brand on a drive. He nearly lost the eye in June when shards of glass embedded in his cornea after he got caught in a bottle-throwing melee in New York.

Tim Duncan stayed home with a sore right knee, but DeJuan Blair made up for his absence by scoring a season-high 22 points.

Rodrigue Beaubois led the Mavericks with a season-high 19 points.

Dallas cut a 15-point deficit to four in the final minute with mostly reserves on the floor, but Nando De Colo hit two free throws with 2.2 seconds left to end the threat.

Parker's head collided with Brand's arm on a drive early in the first quarter, and no foul was called. Parker stayed down alone under the basket covering his left eye for about 20 seconds during a Dallas possession on the other end. Once play stopped, Parker had to be separated from the referees as he was led to the bench.

When he returned early in the second quarter, Parker hit three straight shots and finished the half with 10 points.

The Spurs took control with a 21-6 run in the third quarter, capped when a pass from driving Dallas point guard Darren Collison went through O.J. Mayo's legs. The turnover led to a San Antonio fast break that ended with Boris Diaw throwing a behind-the-back pass to Tiago Splitter for a layup and a 74-49 San Antonio lead.

The Mavericks was within 10 early in the fourth when Parker hit consecutive layups for a 105-90 lead after a strange sequence that resulted in a technical foul against Dallas coach Rick Carlisle even though officials reversed the call that caused him to complain.

Vince Carter tipped in a miss, but Courtney Kirkland called goaltending. Carlisle argued and was given the technical, and the Spurs still got the free throw even after Carter was awarded the basket when Kirkland consulted with the crew. The Dallas lead was briefly 10 before Gary Neal hit the free throw and Parker drove for the back-to-back layups.

San Antonio played most of the game without Manu Ginobili as well. He didn't play in the second half and finished scoreless on 0-for-2 shooting.

The Spurs still finished with seven players in double figures. Neal had 18.

The Spurs sure didn't miss Duncan in the first half. Blair, who usually gets more playing time when Duncan sits, led everyone with 17 points on 8-of-9 shooting in the first half.

Blair repeatedly got uncontested shots at the rim off pick-and-rolls and hit a couple of nifty running bank shots, including one when Neal jumped and couldn't find anywhere to throw the ball before sliding a bounce pass to Blair just before coming back down.

Dallas shot just 37 percent in the first half and was led by Beaubois with seven points. Dirk Nowitzki, who debuted a month ago in a 38-point loss at San Antonio after a 27-game absence following right knee surgery, and Mayo got just seven shots before halftime and had six points combined.

Nowitzki finished with 15, and Mayo had 14. Vince Carter scored 17 for Dallas.

NOTES: Spurs coach Gregg Popovich missed his second straight game because of illness. Mike Budenholzer led Wednesday's 106-102 victory against New Orleans. ... The Spurs got in the first quarter behind eight points apiece from Neal, Diaw and Blair. Neal had a four-point play when Collison knocked him over just as he released a 3-pointer from the right wing.

How Do Airline CEOs Get Around For Business? ? Civil Aviation ...

I know their time is very valuable, and they need to be available, do they fly on their airlines and get delayed like the rest of us or do they charter business-jets?

I'm sure for personal reasons they can probably afford to go private

58 replies: All unread, showing first 25:
Our CEO (Parker) is frequently seen flying around for both business and leisure. He has been on a couple of my flights. Both times he was in Y, and once with his family. I am sure he gets upgraded more than the average passenger- but in both cases I have seen him just a regular Y seat.
I remember people posting about seeing Richard Anderson on DL flights. My dad saw Bill Ayer (then the CEO of AS) on an AS flight several years ago, flying coach. My dad only realized who it was after the FAs started chatting with him.
Can they fly priority on other airlines? I'm sure there's some gentleman's agreement.
The management team at an airline will be treated like the management team at any other business.

Their time is valuable, and they will take whatever airline gets them to their destination the fastest. I believe Gary Kelly from WN has been seen flying AA out of DFW many time. Business is business.

I'm sure the McDonald's CEO eats at Burger King from time to time. On this website there is this huge fascination with brands and companies, that fascination and insane fanboyism just doesn't exist in the real world, because business is business.

If a CEO can?t fly on the airline they run, they have no business running the airline! They need to be a passenger and see what it?s like. If they don?t like it, why would anyone else?

Rumor has it the reason why O?Hare is getting jetways to remove all hardstands on the F Concourse is because Smisek got stuck out on the ramp in the middle of winter and disliked it so much there are now jetways there.

In the 70s Eddie Carlson at UA would work the flight once on board to talk to employees!

Because I work for a specific airline, that means I can't buy a ticket on a competitor, to save myself time and add convenience?

I also wait tables on the side for spending cash, does that mean I cannot eat at any other restaurant that competes with the restaurant I work at?

Back in the late 1980s I was on a Hawaiian Air DC-8 flight from Honolulu to Apia, Western Samoa with a stop in Pago Pago, American Samoa. The president of Hawaiian happened to be on the flight in First Class. The plane suffered mechanical problems for several hours in Pago Pago and the president of Hawaiian was delayed along with the rest of us. He stayed on board in First while the rest of the passengers were ushered into the terminal to wait for the plane to be fixed. When we re-boarded quite a few hours later the Hawaiian president, still sitting on board, looked none too pleased. By the way, any passenger who happened to read the in-flight magazine would have noticed the company president was on board as his face was included in the president's message at the front of the magazine.

Exactly. Businessmen will always patronize other establishments and companies within their industry. Sometimes, it's convenience. Sometimes, it's sizing up the competition.

If a CEO can?t fly on the airline they run, they have no business running the airline!

So the CEO of Southwest is never allowed to go to Asia? No airline serves all routes, let along all routes at the time that the CEO might need to go there. At the end of the day, the mission is to get from A to B. If a CEO's own airline flies A to B and gets to B at the time they need to be there, I'm sure they'd default to using their own airline. But if they don't, which is going to happen pretty often in the real world, you take the flight that makes sense.
    Quoting C767P (Reply 5):
They need to be a passenger and see what it?s like. If they don?t like it, why would anyone else?

There's a huge difference between *never* flying your own airline and *always* flying your own airline. Any good CEO will "sample" their own product. That doesn't mean they do it 100% of the time they need to travel.

The Boeing corporate jet fleet contains mostly non-Boeing aircraft...this isn't because the management hates Boeing, it's because most of their flying is economically ill suited to Boeing's products.

    Tom.

John Leahy has been know to fly aboard a B-747 on his way to make a sale for the A-380 if it got him there in the time period he needed.

This is correct. A coworker of mine went to play soccer with a bunch of Coke employees and he showed up with Gatorade. They made him go get Powerade before playing. Now he shows up with Gatorade in a Powerade bottle. Coke is one example where you may sample the competition but you better damn well not do it in public!
Executives usually get positive space tickets on any flight. Depending on the airline and executives will fly economy or first class. It has more to do with publicity and union relations to have the executives flying coach. In reality, their time and productivity is extremely important and positive space business class is acceptable. No company outside of aviation that I know of sends executives economy, so to keep the executives happy, you need to treat them well, although sometimes the voracious unions don?t see things the same way.

Most international airlines send management employees in business class for international trips. Some will do whatever class is available, but again when you are sending a manager or engineer to a different country to meet with Boeing or Airbus you want them fresh and alert on arrival, so it is best for the company to send them in business class rather than waste productivity having people adjust to jetlag that you get in economy.

Airlines always have 50% or more discounted travel on other airlines. Again time is often most important. If management at United needs to go somewhere that they don?t serve or the route can be cumbersome, they could end up on any airline that they have a reciprocal agreement with. Southwest has some of the best positive space and non-revenue travel agreements.

In the alliance and marketing world you see United, Delta and American as bitter enemies, but in reality the airlines at the management level work together really well. Flying on the competition is something they are willing to do. When it comes to management, contracts and engineering, the airlines work together a lot. You?ll see their engineers sitting side by side and working together at the various industry conferences. They?ll share maintenance successes and failures and talk about how to improve reliability. The reliability engineers all have each others? phone numbers and they work together. Despite what brand loyalty and marketing people push, the airlines do all work together. They share spare parts to save money and they will all reaccommodate and help each other out when they can. While you?ll rarely see Delta handling United above the wing or vice versa, it is very common to have them sharing maintenance resources and contract to each other.

I am sure he gets upgraded more than the average passenger- but in both cases I have seen him just a regular Y seat.

DL will upgrade any employee/family member/retiree/buddy pass if there's space available. CEO on down to most recently hired. Although, I've heard that RA regularly gives his F seat to uniformed service people. DL serves CDG-JFK, but I took AF because I wanted to add a 773 to my list of flown types. I also took what seemed to be the oldest 737 still flying (WN), SFO-SAN. The ZED program is a terrific benefit to OAL employees.
I was asking because my United flight got delayed 3 hours yesterday

Now I'm sure United's CEO wants to fly on his own airline and promote his airline. But I just don't see him waiting at some gate for 3 hours..

I'm sure United's employees would rather have him available and pay for a Challenger or Gulfstream to fly him to his destination

Nope, he waits with everyone. However he'll usually have a better idea of the scope of delay, so his rebooking options are much better.

It's good perspective to have him adequately fund preventative maintenance ?

Airline CEOs often fly on their competitors all the time. In fact, doing so is often PREFERRED by the executives so that they can actually work/sleep on the flight instead of have the entire trip turn into a gripe session from the employees. There are times when it is smart for the airline's CEO ot fly on his/her own airline, but for the most part, their travel is time and mission sensitive, so they fly on their competitors to be as discreet as possible.

Even ramp agents, moreso at outstations, work with other airlines if they are in a pinch. Towbar gets broken and they need to borrow one, usually more than happy to let them borrow one. Or if we get a charter (or diversion) on an aircraft we are not very familiar with, but another airline is, we'll go ask for some pointers and advice. If their breakroom vending machine has Funyuns and ours doesn't, there's no problem at all to go to their ramp breakroom and buy a bag of Funyuns. People (and really most of it is this website) see this huge rivalry and hate towards other airlines....but on the front line we are all being screwed by the industry, the only difference is the company name. So front line agents usually are also pretty empathetic towards our fellow industry workers, even if they are a "rival" they are by no means an "enemy" at all.

Can they fly priority on other airlines? I'm sure there's some gentleman's agreement.

Yes, All officers of say AA can fly on any other US carrier. Foreign Im not sure. Herb use to fly AA quite often.

There were stories during the AA labor problems that their top mgmt was flying around on UA, unconfirmed though

Or if you work for Virgin America in SFO and want anything from the United guys. Maybe it?s less of a rivalry than it appears, but I?ve heard of UA pilots offloading VX deadheading pilots because they don?t like VX.

Of course I?ve also seen an AA pilot who was deadheading on a VX flight personally help unload all the extra oversized carry on items because the gate staff couldn?t handle them.

I?m not sure what airline you are working for, but usually executives that I saw flying were traveling between the hubs for various meetings. On United, you?re going to see Smisek flying between SFO, ORD and IAH a lot. No need to fly the competition. I?m not sure what type of mission sensitive work is being done. Also, Smisek usually tries to relate to the employees and I?ve heard he?s quite gracious when you meet him. You?ll hear about the usual union steward berating, but it?s not that unusual to see the executives talking with the crews while flying.

Right, because it's better to broadcast those "sensitive missions" to your competitors by flying on their airplanes...

A lot of airlines have a way in deciding who gets a free seat and who does not. Own airline captains 1st, then FOs then FAs then managament and other employees then pilots from other airlines. Could have easily been off loaded because a UA pilot needed the ride instead. Even if he got there after the UA pilot gets the seat. Your story can be true. It certainly does happen like pilots from Go Jet or maybe Republic or some of those other regionals some pilots don't like.

As for the "rivarly" between airlines I think that is more of a marketing thing. Sure there are rivals and do business against eachother but at sometimes they do need to work together especially on the front lines at the airport in operations. If they did not help eachother out difficult situations would be even more difficult for everyone.
