Hexagrid-Cobalt Disaster Recovery: True Business Continuity ...

Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) developer Hexagrid and disaster recovery (DR) specialist Cobalt Solutions are partnering on a cloud-based Disaster Recovery (DR) solution that will run on Hexagrid?s cloud computing platform.

According to the press release, the two companies are launching ?the first ever cloud-based disaster recovery solution that offers true business continuity,? and the new DR service offers ?businesses the most comprehensive opportunity to proceed with ?business as usual? when disaster strikes.?

What I don?t see in the press release ? which is not to say the Hexagrid-Cobalt DR product isn?t a good one ? is an attempt to substantiate those claims and differentiate the new solution from existing cloud-based DR. Hexagrid CEO Suresh Mandava continued in the same vein as the press release in his prepared statement: ?Unlike the hosted data backup services being sold as cloud-based disaster recovery today, Cobalt is offering the only true opportunity for business continuity in the event of a disaster.?

That?s a bold statement.

I would like to know how the Hexagrid-Cobalt DR solution is different from?and for that matter superior to?cloud-based DR technologies already on the market. This contributing blogger hopes that the two companies can provide a response to that question.

The ?About? section in the release mentions that Cobalt is located in Nevada, ?away from natural disasters often experienced on the U.S. coast line,? which ?provides a refuge in the desert when it comes to DR Services.? That geographic fact is worth considering, and Cobalt even has a dedicated 500-seat call center in Las Vegas for its DR customers, but how does the technology itself make the solution the only one offering ?true business continuity??

Here?s what Hexagrid?s CEO Suresh Mandava said in a prepared statement: ?Cobalt proposed an exciting opportunity for Hexagrid to engineer another unique DR application of our Infrastructure as a Service cloud computing platform. Because of the uniquely extensive and complex network capabilities built into our platform, the Cobalt Solutions team can now assist their clients in establishing a cloud architecture that exactly replicates an existing production environment. Then, incremental backups of physical and virtual resources within the production environment populate a fully secure, fully operational cloud-based replica environment in one of Cobalt?s new data centers.?

I?m still not seeing the differentiator here. I hope either Hexagrid or Cobalt can provide me with the answer.

Philander gives S. Africa easy win in N.Z. Test

Vernon Philander produced the best figures of his remarkable early career for South Africa to wrap up the second Test against New Zealand by nine wickets inside three days on Saturday.

The tourists needed just 20 overs to reach the 101-run target in Hamilton, after New Zealand's second innings crumbled under Philander's brilliant swing bowling to be all out for 168.

Skipper Graeme Smith was not out 55 with Hashim Amla on 46 as South Africa made 103-1. Smith ended the one-sided match at Seddon Park with a boundary off Rob Nicol.

But the big win was set up by the 26-year-old Philander.

Playing in only his sixth Test, he produced the best bowling of his brief career of 6-44 to give him match figures of 10-114 and the man-of-the-match award.

He now boasts Test career statistics of five five-wicket hauls and a total of 45 wickets at an average 13.6 runs apiece, closing the gap with teammate Dale Steyn who is the world's top ranked bowler.

"If he keeps going the way he is then he'll get there pretty soon," Smith said.

"It's terrific because they all work together and they know their roles but they all want to be successful in their own right, egging each other on."

New Zealand captain Ross Taylor admitted his side folded under the pressure imposed by Philander and Steyn, who finished with match figures of 5-80.

"We were probably on top in a couple of crucial times but I thought Philander, the way he bowled throughout both innings, he and Steyn, put pressure on our batsmen and the pressure told at the end of the day," he added.

New Zealand resumed the day at 65-4, three runs in arrears, with Kane Williamson and Daniel Vettori (21) forging a dogged stand at the crease.

Williamson took 41 balls to advance from his overnight score of 41 to make a half century and Vettori was just as watchful as Philander and Dale Steyn swung the ball.

The hosts nudged the score to 99 before captain Smith brought in Jacques Kallis, who broke the partnership with a short ball which reared up, flicking Vettori on the gloves for Mark Boucher to take the simplest of catches.

Philander then returned to wrap up the innings with an outstanding spell of bowling in which he took 4-14 in 18 balls.

He took Kruger van Wyk (20) before lunch and then New Zealand's anchor Williamson for 77 immediately after the break.

Mark Gillespie belted two fours and a six off Philander in one over before he was caught behind and the rampaging South African bowled Chris Martin for a duck to wrap up the Kiwi innings for 168, to go with their first innings 185.

With a small total to defend and more than two days remaining, New Zealand had no option but to attack and they claimed the wicket of Alviro Petersen in the second over when he played back to Doug Bracewell and edged the ball to South Africa-born wicketkeeper van Wyk.

But that was to be the Black Caps' only success as captain Ross Taylor kept his field in hoping for catches that never came while leaving the boundaries exposed to any ball that broke the cordon.

In the space of 20 overs he used seven bowlers but none troubled Smith and Amla, who steered the ball around the park with ease.

Smith faced 60 balls for his 55, which included eight fours and a six, while Amla's 46 came from 56 balls.

South Africa lead the three-Test series 1-0, after rain spoiled any chance of a result in the first Test. The third and final match starts in Wellington next Friday.

OncoGenex Snags $50M for Prostate Cancer Drug Plan | Xconomy

Luke Timmerman3/16/12

OncoGenex Pharmaceuticals decided it needed to spend more money on the final stage of clinical trials for its prostate cancer drug, so today it went out and raised a?lot more?cash.

The Bothell, WA and Vancouver, BC-based company (NASDAQ: OGXI) said today it has raised $50 million through an underwritten stock offering. The company sold about 4.2 million new shares at $12 apiece. That price represented a?massive 31 percent discount to OncoGenex?s closing stock price of $17.43 yesterday, and the dilutive effect of having 4.2 million new shares in the market helped drive down OncoGenex stock more than 20 percent, to $13.89 at noon Eastern?today.

Leerink Swann and Stifel Nicolaus Weisel are leading the offering, with assistance from Lazard Capital Markets and William Blair & Co. The company expects to get about $46.8 million after expenses and fees from the transaction.

The offering comes a?little more than a?week after OncoGenex said it was overhauling its Phase III clinical development plan for custirsen, a?treatment for prostate cancer being developed in collaboration with Teva Pharmaceutical. OncoGenex and Teva said last week they were closing down one clinical trial of 300 patients because of slow enrollment, and replacing it with another study of 630 men that will recruit a?sicker population of men getting their second round of chemotherapy. Another trial, called Synergy, was expanded from 800 patients to 1,000 to get enough patients in a?database to satisfy regulators, the company said. Both Synergy, and the new 630-patient trial, are supposed to answer whether the OncoGenex drug can help men live longer with prostate?cancer.

The new plan?designed to help OncoGenex differentiate itself in a?crowded market against Dendreon, Johnson & Johnson, Medivation, and Exelixis?is considerably raising OncoGenex?s expenses this year. The company entered this year with $65 million of cash and investments in the bank, and said last week that it expected to burn through $40 million to $45 million of those reserves this year. Results from the Synergy trial are expected by the fourth quarter of 2013, and OncoGenex has said previously it had enough money to run the business into?2014.

Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research

  • A new study examines neural activation among individuals with and without a history of alcohol-induced fragmentary blackouts.
  • The two groups did not differ in performance on a contextual-memory task while sober, but did exhibit different brain-response patterns after alcohol intoxication.
  • This suggests a neurobiological mechanism associated with alcohol-induced fragmentary blackouts.

Alcohol's effects on memory range from mild deficits to alcohol-induced blackouts. That said, very little research has been carried out on memory impairments among individuals who have experienced alcohol-induced blackouts. A new study of neural activation during a contextual-memory task among individuals with and without a history of alcohol-induced fragmentary blackouts demonstrates individual differences in how alcohol impacts memory.

Results will be published in the June 2012 issue of Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research and are currently available at Early View.

"Prior research had shown that individuals who experienced alcohol-induced blackouts were more likely than those who had not experienced blackouts to exhibit memory impairments when intoxicated," said Reagan R. Wetherill, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, San Diego and corresponding author for the study. "Our study is the first examination of neural activity during a contextual-memory task among individuals with a history of alcohol-induced blackouts."

"Blackouts have been widely regarded as an important warning signal of problem drinking for many decades now," observed Bryan Hartzler, a research scientist at the University of Washington's Alcohol & Drug Abuse Institute. "But some people may mistakenly equate the term 'alcohol blackout' with only a more extreme experience of memory loss where one 'loses time' for a period during which the brain essentially just stops making memories. Fragmentary blackouts are less severe than that, in that just portions of one's experience are forgotten and can be recalled via use of retrieval cues. However, fragmentary blackouts have also been shown to be much more prevalent, at least among young adults. The current study's inclusion of functional magnetic resonance imaging technology provides a direct, powerful means to examine underlying biological correlates of this more common type of alcohol-induced blackout."

Wetherill and her colleagues used data from a larger, longitudinal study of alcohol use and behavioral risks to examine 24 individuals (12 males, 12 females) with (n=12) and without (n=12) a history of fragmentary blackouts. All participants completed a block design contextual memory task across 48 functional magnetic resonance imaging sessions, with and without alcohol, during which task performance and brain hemodynamic activity were measured.

Wetherill explained that the block design contextual memory task involves a study phase and a test phase. During the study phase, images are shown with a cue question such as "living or nonliving?," followed by a brief rest, then different images are shown with a different cue question such as "pleasant or unpleasant?" After several "blocks" of images are shown, the test phase has participants recall the images and cue questions, adding an additional image that was never shown. Wetherill said this task is designed to assess a person's ability to remember contextual information like the cue question when presented with a previous experience like a specific image.

"Our study's findings suggest that some people are more likely to experience alcohol-induced blackouts than others due to the way alcohol affects brain activity in areas involved in self-monitoring, attention, and working memory," said Wetherill.

"Through use of imaging technology, this study has made the really intriguing finding that the unique patterns of blood flow and neural activity seen in persons prone to experience those amnestic phenomena emerged only after they became intoxicated," said Hartzler. "That finding, taken together with results from prior research on fragmentary blackouts, suggests there are salient individual differences in how alcohol impacts memory, and that those differences can be identified by both behavioral and neurophysiological markers."

"Alcohol intoxication attenuated recollection-related brain activity in the right frontopolar cortex, which is a brain region involved in 'multitasking,'" said Wetherill. "Later, when sober, individuals with a history of blackouts showed slightly impaired recollection and attenuated brain activity in prefrontal and posterior parietal brain regions typically involved in attention, inhibitory processing, decision-making, and working memory. Thus, alcohol appears to affect a person's ability to multitask, and also affects some people's ability to engage brain areas required for encoding and remembering previous experiences."

"Irrespective of the specific type of alcohol-related memory loss involved, if one is experiencing blackouts it is an important signal that negative personal and health consequences are more likely to occur," said Hartzler. "Not fully recalling one's life experiences, particularly those that occur while one is intoxicated, creates a state of vulnerability where the chances increase for the individual to incur all kinds of problems."

Wetherill agreed. "Given that approximately 40 percent of college students experience alcohol-induced blackouts and, in some cases, later discover they engaged in unwanted/risky sex, drove, or other complex behaviors, our findings highlight the fact that alcohol impairs brain functioning and some people may be more vulnerable to alcohol's effects than others," she said. "In other words, just because your friend may be able to drink a certain number of drinks and appear to be functioning fine, it does not mean that you or everyone else can."

Keep lists of your progress daily. When you have completed these lists, do not be so quick to throw them away. Just because the lists are complete does not mean you're done with them. Try surrounding yourself with your progress by keeping them and displaying them. This can offer you drive and let you believe that you can accomplish your goals.

Building on your goals and aspirations to become a better person or maybe to gain and conquer new things, you should remain educated and keep your knowledge base expanding. This can be accomplished through tradition formal education or non-conventional strategies. By exciting your body and mind, you may be one step nearer to becoming the person you wish to be.

Have goals. This will help give structure to your life. You'll have obscure concepts of what you want to do, but having concrete goals that you write down and take a look at every day, compels you to start on achieving those goals rather than sighing and pronouncing ?oh, someday.?

Do one important thing to improve yourself every day. Tiny enhancements add up and outline the individual you are. Meeting daily self improvement goals won't only make you better at the things which you do, it will also enhance your mood and your confidence. Attempt to be a little better each day than you were the day before.

Break down giant goals into controllable steps. Many times our goals are ambitious, which is a great thing. However enormous goals can appear unattainable, leading you to become daunted and lose incentive.

Before starting any big project or goal, break it down into smaller steps. Get as detailed as your are able to. Shortly you will be on the right track to success.visit our Blog MindMoviesMatrix to learn how to use Visualization in setting Goals.

EDF Energy pays ?4.5 million in settlement

The British arm of French electricity giant EDF has agreed to pay a total of ?4.5 million to thousands of customers over the way it marketed its products, regulator Ofgem said Friday.

Ofgem decided it was better for the firm to help 70,000 vulnerable customers, like the elderly who struggle with high energy bills, rather than making EDF Energy pay a fine, the regulator said in a statement.

It added that the total payout, equivalent to 5.38 million euros or $7.1 million, was agreed by both sides after EDF Energy staff were found to have told customers they could save money without knowing individual circumstances.

Some customers were also not provided with full information regarding contracts and bill payments.

"Ofgem's investigation found that EDF Energy had breached its marketing licence conditions," the regulator said in a statement.

However, Ofgem stressed in its findings that it did not believe that EDF Energy had engaged in mis-selling.

"The authority does not consider that EDF Energy has allowed or condoned mis-selling," it said, adding that it had concerns that the interests of consumers were nor properly protected as a result of the breaches.

The regulator added that it was still investigating EDF Energy rivals Scottish Power, SSE and npower over similar issues and after toughening its marketing rules amid a shakeup of energy industry regulation in Britain.

EDF Energy will spend ?3.5 million on refunding customers. A further ?1.0 million will go to the Energy Best Deal public awareness campaign run by charity Citizens Advice.

Ofgem's senior partner in charge of enforcement, Sarah Harrison, said: "EDF Energy has done the right thing by stepping forward and recognising there were weaknesses in its sales processes. The firm also took the initiative to correct these problems during Ofgem's investigation."

She added: "In the energy market in general, much more needs to be done to restore consumer confidence and all energy suppliers should now get behind Ofgem's reforms."

Martin Lawrence, managing director for energy sourcing and customer supply at EDF, said: "We're obviously disappointed that we failed to live up to the high standards that we expect of ourselves.

"As soon as the issue was identified, we immediately took action to satisfy ourselves that we're fully compliant."

Pacific nation may buy Fiji land as climate refuge

FILE - In this March 30, 2004 file photo, a man fishes on a bridge on Tarawa atoll, Kiribati. Fearing that climate change could wipe out their entire Pacific archipelago, the leaders of Kiribati are considering an unusual backup plan: moving the populace to Fiji. Kiribati President Anote Tong told The Associated Press on Friday, March 9, 2012 that his Cabinet this week endorsed a plan to buy nearly 6,000 acres on Fiji's main island, Viti Levu. He said the fertile land, being sold by a church group for about $9.6 million, could provide an insurance policy for Kiribati's entire population of 103,000, though he hopes it will never be necessary for everyone to leave. Fearing that climate change could wipe out their entire Pacific archipelago, the leaders of Kiribati are considering an unusual backup plan: moving the populace to Fiji.

Kiribati President Anote Tong told The Associated Press on Friday that his Cabinet this week endorsed a plan to buy nearly 6,000 acres on Fiji's main island, Viti Levu. He said the fertile land, being sold by a church group for about $9.6 million, could be insurance for Kiribati's entire population of 103,000, though he hopes it will never be necessary for everyone to leave.

"We would hope not to put everyone on one piece of land, but if it became absolutely necessary, yes, we could do it," Tong said. "It wouldn't be for me, personally, but would apply more to a younger generation. For them, moving won't be a matter of choice. It's basically going to be a matter of survival."

Kiribati, which straddles the equator near the international date line, has found itself at the leading edge of the debate on climate change because many of its atolls rise just a few feet above sea level.

Tong said some villages have already moved and there have been increasing instances of sea water contaminating the island's underground fresh water, which remains vital for trees and crops. He said changing rainfall, tidal and storm patterns pose as least as much threat as ocean levels, which so far have risen only slightly.

Some scientists have estimated the current level of sea rise in the Pacific at about 2 millimeters (0.1 inches) per year. Many scientists expect that rate to accelerate due to climate change.

Fiji, home to about 850,000 people, is about 1,400 miles south of Kiribati. But just what people there think about potentially providing a home for thousands of their neighbors remains unclear. Tong said he's awaiting full parliamentary approval for the land purchase, which he expects in April, before discussing the plan formally with Fijian officials.

Sharon Smith-Johns, a spokeswoman for the Fijian government, said several agencies are studying Kiribati's plans and the government will release a formal statement next week.

Kiribati, which was known as the Gilbert Islands when it was a British colony, has been an independent nation since 1979.

Tong has been considering other unusual options to combat climate change, including shoring up some Kiribati islands with sea walls and even building a floating island. He said this week that the latter option would likely prove too expensive, but that he hopes reinforcing some islands will ensure that Kiribati continues to exist in some form even in a worst-case scenario.

"We're trying to secure the future of our people," he said. "The international community needs to be addressing this problem more."

Tong said he hopes that the Fiji land will represent just one of several options for relocating people. He pointed out that the land is three times larger than the atoll of Tarawa, currently home to more than half of Kiribati's population.

Although like much of the Pacific, Kiribati is poor ? its annual GDP per person is just $1,600 ? Tong said the country has plenty of foreign reserves to draw from for the land purchase. The money, he said, comes from phosphate mining on the archipelago in the 1970s.

The new iPad is official, with Retina display, LTE and A5X CPU. Available March 16th

iPad
So, what'd you have in the office pool? iPad 3, iPad 2S, iPad HD? Doesn't matter, really. All that matters is that it's here! This is the next generation of Apple's iOS slate and, as usual, she's a beaut -- and yes, she's still rockin' a physical button. As was rumored this thing is packing a Retina display, potentially making this the most pixel-packed slate on the market. The 9.7-inch screen plays host to 3.1 million pixels in a 2048 x 1536 arrangement -- that's 264ppi. It's not just a higher resolution though, the screen also boasts improved color saturation. Of course, what would a new iPad be without some updated guts. The new model has an A5X processor and quad-core graphics chip. Apple even claims its newest sliver of silicon can deliver four times the performance of a Tegra 3 -- we'd say dems fightin' words.

There's also a new iSight camera on board that's quite similar to the version inside the iPhone 4S. It's only five-megapixels, but it does have a backside illuminated sensor with a five element lens. It's also capable of capturing 1080p video, which should come as no surprise. We're also excited to see the keyboard sporting a brand new dictation key that lets you speak instead of type -- yes, just like on Android. The new software inside will also let you use the slate as a portable WiFi hotspot... so long as the carriers are game. It even has the ability to recognize at least some bezel gestures, as revealed during its iPhoto demo.

Perhaps most exciting though, is the new connectivity options -- you guessed, LTE! The new iPad is sporting 21Mbps HSPA+, but it's also rocking an LTE radio capable of pulling down 73Mbps on both Verizon and AT&T here in the US. Outside of the states Rogers, Bell and Telus will also be scoring 4G flavors of the iOS tablet. Amazingly enough, even with an LTE antenna on board, Apple is still claiming to get 10 hours of battery life. That's probably partially do to the slightly increased weight of 1.4lbs, though the 9.4mm thickness is nothing to sniff at.

The new iPad will be available March 16th, starting at $499 for the 16GB WiFi model and scaling up to $829 for the 64GB version with 4G. So, on the price front, nothing has changed. Pre-orders start today in the US, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Switzerland, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia, with much of the rest of the globe to follow on March 23rd. For more details hit up the PR after the break.

Obama talks energy, jobs in NC a day after primary

(AP) ? President Barack Obama will outline incentives to promote development of more fuel-efficient cars and to make it easier for people to buy and operate next-generation vehicles during an election-year visit Wednesday to a North Carolina truck plant.

The morning after Super Tuesday voting, Obama was continuing a schedule of weekly visits to politically important states with his trip to a Daimler truck plant in Mount Holly, N.C. With the price of gasoline at its highest levels for this time of year, Obama once again was promoting policies he says will result in less foreign oil dependency over the long term.

He does so as the Republican field seeking to defeat him in November remains unsettled. Mitt Romney squeezed out a win in pivotal Ohio on Tuesday, captured five other states with ease and padded his delegate lead in the race for the Republican presidential nomination. But the front-runner was forced to share the Super Tuesday spotlight with a resurgent Rick Santorum.

Obama declined an opportunity to offer Romney any advice before polls closed Tuesday. "Good luck," was all Obama said.

Like Obama, the Republican candidates have been focused on jobs and the economy.

Wednesday marks Obama's first visit to a foreign automaker as president, but he is pushing a familiar theme. The White House said Obama would highlight the government's fuel efficiency standards for cars and medium- and heavy-duty trucks. Obama promoted his energy agenda in Florida and New Hampshire over the past two weeks.

Obama was announcing a $1 billion incentive proposal to challenge cities and towns to come up with ways to help people make use of fuel-efficient technologies, such as more charging stations for electric vehicles, administration officials said.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because Obama had not yet laid out the proposal.

If Congress approves, up to 15 model communities would be picked as models of innovation.

Obama's proposal effectively endorses a 2011 bipartisan congressional proposal to jump-start the market penetration of electric vehicles through model communities, but expands it to include other kinds of advanced fuel-efficient vehicles.

Obama has called for 1 million plug-in vehicles on American roads by 2015.

Obama's attention to energy comes as high gas prices put a strain on pocket books. On Tuesday, the nationwide average for regular unleaded slipped less than a penny to $3.764 per gallon, ending a string of price increases that began on Feb. 8.

"It's not good for the overall economy, because when gas prices go up, consumer spending oftentimes pulls back," Obama said Tuesday in a White House news conference. "And we're in the midst right now of a recovery that is starting to build up steam, and we don't want to reverse it."

Obama was also touting tax incentives for the purchase and deployment of more fuel-efficient vehicles that were included in his proposed budget for next year. He wants to increase the purchase incentive for some kinds of advanced vehicles to $10,000 from $7,500, something that would require congressional approval, and make the credit available to car buyers at the time of sale.

Obama was visiting a long-distance truck plant that has been hiring new workers to help fill an uptick in orders. It's a chance for him to tout a rebounding economy that is creating more jobs ? especially in the manufacturing sector.

Obama will talk about the economy at a Freightliner plant in Mount Holly, a community of 14,000. It's one of three Freightliner plants in the Charlotte area. He was proposing a new purchase credit for fuel-efficient large trucks.

Obama won North Carolina by 14,000 votes in 2008, the slimmest margin of all the states he carried. He was the first Democrat since Jimmy Carter to carry the state. The Democratic National Convention is being held in Charlotte in early September.

Growing demand has prompted Freightliner, a division of Germany's Daimler Trucks North America, to hire more workers to build trucks. Last year, the company said it would bring back 447 manufacturing jobs and 27 administrative positions in Mount Holly.

Freightliner announced in February it would hire 1,100 more workers at its Rowan County factory in Cleveland, and an additional 100 at a nearby Gastonia parts plant.

At one time, the Freightliner plant in Cleveland employed nearly 4,000 workers, said Corey Hill, president of United Auto Workers Local 3520. Now it has about 1,600, but more hires are expected.

Unemployment in Gaston and Rowan counties, where the plants are located, has been higher than the state average of 9.9 percent in December ? the last month when figures were available.

Some Freightliner workers make $24 an hour with benefits.

Obama told business leaders Tuesday that the nation needs to reform its tax system to help boost the economy, saying the American people "instinctually understand" that the U.S. needs a more balanced approach to solve its economic problems.

"The economy is getting stronger and the recovery is speeding up. The question now is how do we make sure it keeps going," Obama said to the Business Roundtable, an association of chief executive officers of top U.S. corporations.
