SAN FRANCISCO (CBS/AP) ? Two tech titans are squaring off in federal court Monday in a closely-watched trial over control of the U.S. smart phone and computer tablet markets.
Apple Inc. filed a lawsuit against Samsung Electronics Co. last year alleging the world?s largest technology company?s smart phones and computer tablets are illegal knockoffs of its popular iPhone and iPad products. The Cupertino-based company is demanding $2.5 billion in damages, which if awarded would dwarf the largest patent-related verdict to date.
Samsung counters that Apple is doing the stealing and some of the technology at issue ? such as the rounded rectangular designs of smart phones and tablets ? have been industry standards for years.
The U.S. trial is only the latest skirmish between the two over product designs.

CHICAGO (AP) ? Jesse Jackson Jr.'s transfer to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota could indicate a complicating physical illness arose during the Illinois congressman's treatment for depression, several experts in psychiatric care said Saturday.
The Chicago Democrat has been on a secretive leave of absence for nearly seven weeks, during which his office has released only occasional snippets of information, including that he was undergoing treatment for a "mood disorder" at an undisclosed location.
On Friday, the Mayo Clinic distributed a statement from the congressman that said he had been transferred there for "extensive inpatient evaluation for depression and gastrointestinal issues." The clinic would not release more information Saturday.
John Anderson, of the Associates in Psychiatry and Psychology in southeastern Minnesota, said people receiving psychiatric care are often transferred to the Mayo Clinic when a physical illness develops because both can be treated there.
"Mayo does an excellent job in terms of combining those, so they can treat what's essentially a dual diagnosis," he said.
He noted specifically that Mayo Clinic has a highly rated gastrointestinal department as well as a free-standing inpatient psychiatric unit.
Jackson underwent a procedure in 2004 to help him lose weight that involves removing part of the stomach and rearranging the intestine. Phone messages left Saturday for Jackson's spokesman weren't immediately returned.
Friday's statement was the first to mention a gastrointestinal illness, and it was not known whether that was related to his depression or an entirely separate medical issue.
The statement did not disclose where the longtime Chicago congressman, the son of civil rights leader Jesse Jackson, had been staying previously.
He went on leave June 10, though his office didn't disclose it until weeks later and has been mum on details ever since. Initially, his office said Jackson was being treated for exhaustion. But his staff later said Jackson's condition was more serious and required inpatient medical treatment. They also said Jackson has been grappling with emotional issues.
Under mounting pressure from his colleagues and constituents, his office released a statement last month from his unnamed doctor saying Jackson was receiving intensive medical treatment at a residential treatment facility for "a mood disorder."
The timing of his medical leave has raised questions, in part because Jackson is facing an ethics investigation in the U.S. House connected to imprisoned former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich.
The House Ethics Committee is investigating allegations that Jackson was involved in discussions about raising money for Blagojevich's campaign in exchange for the then-governor appointing him to President Barack Obama's vacated U.S. Senate seat. Blagojevich is serving a 14-year prison sentence for corruption.
Jackson was not charged and has repeatedly denied wrongdoing.
Jackson faces Republican and independent candidates in November, though he's widely expected to win re-election. He first won office in a 1995 special election and has easily won each race since. His district includes parts of Chicago and some suburbs.

The idea for a chilled onion soup first came to me when I ran across that recipe title in an old community cookbook during the height of Vidalia season. The title appealed to me, but the actual recipe was a strange combination of canned soups that was quite off-putting. So I decided to adapt a classic cold soup preparation highlighting the brilliant flavor of my favorite onion. Cooking the onions slowly keeps them sweet and mellow, melding perfectly with smooth milk. You could top this soup with some crispy croutons, chopped herbs, cooked bacon pieces or caramelized onion.
Chilled Vidalia Onion Soup
Serves 6?
2 large Vidalia onions, or other sweet yellow onions, to yield 4 cups chopped
3 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons fresh thyme leaves
4 cups light chicken broth
1 cup milk
Kosher salt to taste
Peel and dice the onions. Melt the butter in a large stock pot over medium high heat, then add the onions, sprinkle over several pinches of salt and stir to coat. Add the thyme leaves. Slowly cook the onions, stirring frequently, until they are very soft and translucent, about 20 minutes. Do not let the onions brown or caramelize. When the onions are soft, add 1/2 cup of chicken broth and cook until the liquid has evaporated, being careful not to let the onions brown. Add the remaining broth, bring to a boil, reduce the heat, then cover the pot and simmer 30 minutes.
Remove the soup from the heat and leave to cool. When cool, puree the soup in batches in a blender. Pour the pureed soup through a strainer into a large bowl. Whisk in the milk, salt to taste, and chill until cold, at least two hours but up to overnight.
Serve cold.

GENEVA (AP) ? Seven nations may lose their ability to legally trade tens of thousands of wildlife species after U.N. conservation delegates agreed Thursday to penalize them for lacking tough regulations or failing to report on their wildlife trade.
The suspensions against the seven nations ? Comoros, Guinea-Bissau, Paraguay, Nepal, Rwanda, Solomon Islands and Syria ? were approved by consensus among the delegates and would take effect Oct. 1.
They would prevent the countries from legally trading in any of the 35,000 species regulated by the 175-nation Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, said Juan Carlos Vasquez, a spokesman for the U.N. office that administers the treaty.
Delegations to the weeklong meeting of CITES, a treaty overseen by the U.N. Environment Program in Geneva, agreed to trade suspensions against Comoros, Guinea-Bissau, Paraguay and Rwanda based on their lack of national laws for regulating the lucrative wildlife trade.
The Geneva meeting's attendees also agreed to trade suspensions against Guinea-Bissau, Nepal, Rwanda, Solomon Islands and Syria based on their failure to adequately report what they are doing to regulate wildlife trade, as they are required to do under the CITES treaty.
To avoid the sanctions, and the prospect of losing millions of dollars in commerce, the seven must now draw up the required legislation or submit their missing annual reports to CITES by Oct. 1.
According to CITES, about 97 percent of the species it regulates are commercially traded for food, fuel, forest products, building materials, clothing, ornaments, health care, religious items, collections, trophy hunting and other sport. The other 3 percent are generally prohibited.
CITES estimates the regulated global wildlife trade is between $350 million and $530 million a year, or almost $2.2 billion over the five years from 2006 to 2010. During that time, logging of big leaf mahogany alone accounted for $168 million in trade. By volume, American black bears, South American grey foxes, Senegal parrots and Malaysian box turtles were among the most traded.
TRAFFIC, a wildlife trade monitoring network, estimates that commercial trade in wildlife has risen sharply from around $160 billion a year in the early 1990s. But the multibillion-dollar illegal trade in wildlife is a growing problem, and environmentalists say a big reason is nations' failure to enact stiff penalties for traffickers or enforce wildlife laws already on the books.
The delegates are expected to consider on Friday a more controversial topic: a call to resume the legal ivory trade as a way to stop the recent rise in elephant poaching in Africa.
That proposal, put forward in a CITES-commissioned report, would set up a centralized system to allow for the sale of ivory from elephants that either died naturally or as a result of trophy hunting, or were considered a threat or culled for ecological reasons.
It is the first time such a proposal has been made since a global ban on ivory went into effect in 1989. That ban mostly halted widespread poaching, but in the past decade the problem has worsened owing mainly to an Asian appetite for ivory chopsticks, statues and jewelry.
The rise in rhino poaching also is on the agenda.
Experts rank wildlife smuggling among the top aims of criminal networks, along with drugs and human trafficking. CITES says wildlife crime remains poorly studied, but it says international estimates of the scale of illegal wildlife trade range from between $16 billion and $27 billion a year.
Tiger parts, elephant ivory, rhino horn and exotic birds and reptiles are among the most trafficked items. To fight it, CITES has formed a consortium with Interpol, the U.N. office on drugs and crime, the World Bank and the World Customs Organization.

Passion Pit has always been a poison apple ? or peach, if you want to maintain ?pit? congruity ? for frontman?Michael Angelakos. He completely indulges his thoughts until bursts of vivid ideas spew forth, but this allows confusion and dread to rush in too. The result is glossy hyper-pop with a pervading pensiveness; it?s a delicate balance that has driven the band?s music since the beginning, often at the cost of Angelakos? mental health. The thing is, their debut LP?Manners was so blissfully blown-out that nobody really noticed. (It also helped that many of the lyrics were indecipherable). On Passion Pit?s second album, Gossamer, (out today, July 24) Angelakos has toned down his sky-scraping yelps so that we?ll hear exactly what he is singing about, and the result is an album that? manages to be simultaneously introspective and gregarious.
Gossamer is Angelakos exposed. The title itself connotes something airy and fleeting, and fittingly there?s an iridescence throughout the album, as swarms of intricate programmed chirps, keyboard plinks and heavenly oohs buzz around like fireflies. But make no mistake, thematically Gossamer is heavy and world-weary, the product of an old soul. Over the course of its 12 tracks, ruminations on drinking, abuse and suicide abound. And yet it never sounds bleak: Angelakos seems to be saying happiness is less about perfection and more about acceptance.
And that means acceptance from the listener too: By design, Gossamer is not always euphoric (but it is always pretty). Amidst the checklist of his problems, Angelakos spouts proclamations like ?I?ll be alright?, or ?All these demons, I can beat ?em?, or ?Don?t call me crazy / I?m happy.? But it?s not so clear whether he believes the mantras, and the looming question mark gives the songs a nervous tension, keeping the album from veering into twee territory.
That tone is set on album opener ?Take A Walk? as synths tangle around a tale of love in the time of financial ruin. This fusion of otherworldly pop with of-this-world problems extends into ?I?ll Be Alright?, the album?s most immediate cut, with its hyper-glitchy beats skittering toward disintegration. ?I drink a gin and take a couple or more pills?, Angelakos sings before the music and mood morph into a life-affirming refrain.
Topics like drinking and arguing are unavoidable even on the unexpected slow jam ?Constant Conversations? (?And now I?m drunker than before they / Told me drinking doesn?t make me nice?). Channeling Kanye circa 2005, the R&B groove hovers on a cloud of coos and a rising? ?oh-oh-oh-oooh? chorus, which makes up for the occasionally clunky lyrics (e.g. ?You can tell by a look / By the slightest crook in the neck / Or the blink of an eye?).
R&B isn?t the only new flavor: The bouncy ?Carried Away? unveils the addition of female vocals, care of Swedish trio Erato. Often it?s unclear who?s singing what, because the ladies? voices weave into the material so seamlessly, and this adds a richness to Angelakos? sometimes thin voice.?Speaking of which, he?s no longer using it as an instrument to meld with the various electronic layers. The electro flourishes now buttress the vocals. But like with those big old Gothic cathedrals across Europe, even the buttresses are worthy of admiration, and it?s here where the album really shines. Every track has mesmerizing programmed elements flitting around in the background.
Likewise, nearly every song begins with a high-drama set-piece. This is best illustrated on ?Cry Like A Ghost?, which starts with undulating bass, helium-warped vocal samples and drum machine claps that would all sound right at home on Grimes? Visions. Second half standout ?Hideaway? kicks off with ethereal static that?s so over-processed it sounds like the disc is skipping (remember that?). It?s only later in the track that it becomes clear it was a Breaking Bad-style flash forward to the chorus ? a hazy, out-of-context peek at the future.
But Angelakos? knack for drama is most impressive on the thrilling centerpiece ?Mirrored Sea?. Over a ceaseless rush of percussion and a flurry of blazing synths he sings ?Oh, you mirrored sea / Your waves they?re haunting me,? and it feels like the momentum will toss him right into the water. But just in time, there?s the calming breeze of the song?s trance breakdown to let him catch his breath.
For all the fear and self-doubt and benders, Gossamer has its share of romantic moments as well. The second half of the album examines love and its limits with songs that are a bit more straightforward ? and thus less exciting. ?On My Way? is a majestic love letter to Angelakos? fiancee, featuring orchestral flourishes and a beautifully simple refrain of ?Let?s get married?. Closing number ?Where We Belong? could be seen as the companion piece, an intimate examination of how easily one can spin out of control without the caring hand and watchful eye of a loved one. Lest things get too sappy, there?s the cheeky ?Love Is Greed?, centered on a jubilant chorus of ?Love, love, love? that jackknifes into ?Love is just greed / A selfish little need / You follow or you lead?.?These mid-tempo treatises muddle together a bit, but their delicateness highlights Angelakos? newly restrained songwriting style. Though the melodies aren?t always indelible, there?s always movement.
And it?s that constant motion that keeps Gossamer afloat. By marrying nervy kineticism with sparkling, fluid atmospherics, Angelakos has extracted beauty from restlessness. Gossamer may not be as undeniably fun as the older stuff, but few bands make pop that brims with such vitality.
The Best Song Wasn?t The Single: The song we?re most excited to see live is the evocative ?Mirrored Sea,? with its sprinting-to-the-edge-of-forever beat threatening to jostle you over the cliff.
Pops Like: Passion Pit?s sonic identity is so well defined and well executed that they really only sound like themselves. But, look hard enough and you?ll hear hints of the melancholy neon of Coldplay?s Mylo Xyloto,?Daft Punk?s sweaty drama and even the baroque leanings of Vampire Weekend.
Best Listened To: Side 1: It?s late, you?re drunk and for once you?re with a bunch of people you actually like. Side 2: It?s late, you?re drunk and you?re with a bunch of people you actually like (and one that you might love).

ScienceDaily (July 24, 2012) ? Emerging techniques to pull carbon dioxide from the air and store it away to stabilize the climate may become increasingly important as the planet tips into a state of potentially dangerous warming, researchers from Columbia University's Earth Institute argue in a paper out this week.
The upfront costs of directly taking carbon out of the air will likely be expensive, but such technology may well become cheaper as it develops and becomes more widely used, and cost should not be a deterrent to developing such a potentially valuable tool, the authors said.
The techniques would address sources of CO2 that other types of carbon capture and storage cannot, and have the potential to even lower the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere -- significant because the world may already have crossed beyond the point where the climate can be stabilized by just limiting emissions.
"The field of carbon sequestration, the field of capture and storage as a community is too timid when it comes to new ideas," said lead author Klaus Lackner, director of the Lenfest Center for Sustainable Energy. "You cannot rule out new technology simply because the current implementation is too expensive."
Lackner and his colleagues at the Lenfest Center, part of the Earth Institute, summarize the technical and financial obstacles facing direct air capture of carbon in the review paper, "Urgency of development of CO2 capture from ambient air," published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Lackner has been working on the problem for more than a decade, and he founded a company in 2004 to work toward commercializing the techniques.
Various methods are being developed to extract CO2 directly from stationary sources such as coal-fired power facilities and steel and cement manufacturing plants, storing the CO2 underground or using it for other purposes, such as feeding algae farms to produce biofuel. But these systems do not address the problem of emissions from mobile sources such as cars, trucks and airplanes.
CO2 in the atmosphere, building up from humans' burning of fossil fuels and other activities, has led to warmer average temperatures across the globe, melting ice sheets and glaciers, raising sea levels and producing more frequent extreme weather events. Nine of the 10 warmest years in the modern meteorological record, since 1880, have occurred since 2000; the first six months of 2012 were the 11th warmest on record, based on land and ocean surface temperature measurements, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Climatic Data Center.
CO2 can linger in the atmosphere for hundreds of years; to stabilize and possibly reduce it will take concerted, long-term efforts across the globe -- including the replacement of fossil fuels as an energy source. But, the authors contend, that is not likely to happen fast enough.
"Stabilizing atmospheric CO2 will require drastic emissions reductions," the authors write. "Carbon-free renewable and nuclear energy resources are theoretically sufficient for humankind's energy needs, especially if combined with significant increases in energy efficiency. It is unclear, however, whether these resources can be deployed rapidly and widely enough and overcome socio-political obstacles related to cost, environmental impacts, and public acceptance."
That's where carbon capture and storage comes in. These emerging technologies have the potential to nearly eliminate CO2 emissions from fossil fuel plants. But, the authors say, even modest residual emissions of 10 percent from those plants would prevent us from stabilizing atmospheric CO2 in this century. Air capture technology could be used to mitigate that, and also to deal with the potential problem of CO2 leaking from storage systems, some of which include pumping CO2 deep into the ground.
And, the authors said, those systems do not address all the CO2 coming from more diffused sources, such as in the transportation sector. Those sources account for between a third and a half of society's total CO2 emissions.
Developing systems to capture CO2 directly from the air could help. The paper looks at various methods. As CO2 passes through the systems, it is pulled into absorbent liquids or surfaces, then separated out. But CO2 is less concentrated in ambient air than it is coming out of a stationary source like a power plant. The key is to find a way to grab a lot of CO2 out of the air with a minimum expense of energy. Estimating the cost of that technology right now is impossible, the authors said.
But if a mass-produced device could capture a ton of CO2 per day, a million of them, like forests of artificial trees, could capture more than a tenth of humans' total output of CO2 today.
The authors caution that the development of various types of carbon capture and storage should not be seen as an argument for doing nothing about how we burn energy.
"In a way, it's too late to argue that we shouldn't consider [such] solutions. The concern that this kind of technology would give us an excuse not to do anything [to reduce carbon emissions] is wrong, because we're too late for that," Lackner said. "We have to push very hard right now, and we have to have every means at our disposal to solve this problem."
The paper stands in contrast to a report put out last year by the American Physical Society, which flatly states that direct air capture of CO2 "is not currently an economically viable approach to mitigating climate change."
Without dramatic cost reductions, that report contends, other options for reducing CO2 output from decentralized sources will be more economically feasible -- including increasing efficiency; switching to cars and other devices powered by electricity coming from non-carbon-based sources, such as nuclear, solar and wind; and using low-carbon fuels created from biological or other materials.
Government-sponsored efforts to foster research and development of carbon capture and sequestration are mostly focused on removing CO2 from stationary sources, and even that technology still faces serious financial and technological challenges.
But Lackner and colleagues argue that many other technologies have started out at extremely high cost, which has dropped as the technology is refined and products are produced on mass scales. They also contend the air capture systems could reduce the cost of transporting captured carbon from stationary sources to storage sites.
"Demanding an assurance of economic viability at the outset stifles innovation, favors incrementalism and keeps game-changing ideas from consideration," the authors said. Even if the technology started with a baseline cost of $600 per ton of CO2, the cost could probably be substantially reduced as the technology develops. "The challenge seems large but no larger than the corresponding challenges in other climate mitigation technologies," they say.
Taking CO2 directly out of the air has been going on for decades on a small scale in submarines and spaceships. Processes for liquefying air already require removal of water and CO2, too.
Lackner, a director and adviser to Kilimanjaro Energy, the company he founded, is studying how certain resins could absorb CO2. He and co-author Allen Wright of the Lenfest Center are shareholders and consultants to Kilimanjaro, one of three companies working on various air capture techniques.
Another company working on air capture technology, Global Thermostat, was formed by two Columbia University professors: Peter Eisenberger, a physicist who founded the Earth Institute and formerly ran research labs for Bell Labs and Exxon, and Graciela Chichilnisky, an economist, mathematician and entrepreneur.
Lackner and Wright's co-authors include Sarah Brennan, J?rg Matter, A.-H. Alissa Park and Bob van der Zwaan, all affiliated with the Lenfest Center. Matter also works at the Earth Institute's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory; van der Zwaan also works for the Energy Research Centre of the Netherlands.
